The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture has a legislated mandate to manage, promote, support, and develop the fishing, aquaculture and seafood processing industries that contribute to the economic, environmental and social prosperity of Nova Scotia's coastal and rural communities. Reporting to the Chief Aquatic Animal Health Veterinarian, the incumbent will provide technical expertise and operational support to the Aquatic Animal Health (AAH) Unit's work relating to the provincial aquatic animal health surveillance programs. This includes the examination of cultured aquatic animals through the provision of veterinary care and laboratory support. The candidate will work to ensure coordination of the Unit's program tasks in both field and postmortem settings and during times when general and emergency health concerns arise.



Preparation within postmortem areas to ensure aquatic animal examination and sampling occurs in accordance with provincial health surveillance programs.
Technical expertise in examination of fish, collection of samples for specific diagnostic testing and preparation of sample submissions to both third party labs and in house diagnostics.
Maintenance of fleet vehicles and laboratory spaces ensuring appropriate biosecurity principles are applied.
Procurement, maintenance and inventorying of equipment and supplies relating to operational requirements.
Data and records management duties relating to health surveillance programing and scheduling of site visits.
To be successful in this role you will have a college or vocational diploma in related discipline such as aquatic animal health, plus 6 years related experience, or plus 8 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience maybe acceptable. Understanding of the aquaculture industry in Atlantic Canada is considered an asset.


You should have experience in and be able to demonstrate your technical knowledge of fish necropsy, diagnostics and related laboratory work. You should be skilled in the operation of vehicles, and comfortable working on boats and around water. You must be proficient in the operation of computers for data analysis, word processing and research.


The appointment status ('term', 'temporary' or 'casual') is dependent on the start date of the successful candidate.
