The Manager, Retail Credit adjudicates and oversees the retail lending portfolio within approved credit management policies and delegated limits to support credit union growth objectives while managing risk. This position leads and develops the loans administration department and supports the retail lending team to uphold effective lending practices and exceptional member service. The incumbent contributes to process improvement initiatives and supports the adjudication of loan applications, developing retail lending knowledge, and enhancing member financial well-being.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provides direct management and leadership to the Loans Administration team, ensuring effective operations and employee development.
  • Conducts efficient and accurate adjudication of retail credit applications using sound and consistent analysis and underwriting practices.
  • Communicates credit decisions effectively and respectfully, ensuring clarity & understanding.
  • Demonstrates comprehensive understanding of retail lending policies, procedures, and updates, including third-party partner lending guidelines.
  • Contributes to process improvement initiatives, proactively identifying opportunities to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Ensures retail credit applications and portfolio comply with industry standards, legislation, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Provides consistent feedback and support to retail lenders, fostering professional growth and development.
  • Assists in maintaining overall regulatory compliance by managing monthly reporting and auditing requirements.
  • Supports the Senior Manager, Retail Credit to identify training opportunities for lending employees and works with branch managers and the Senior Training and Advisory Specialist to deliver relevant training.
  • Supports branch managers with coaching and performance management for lending employees.
  • Maintains and updates lending training guides and facilitates training with third-party partners (e.g. CMHC, Sagen, CUMIS) to ensure staff competence and compliance.
  • Works alongside branch managers and the Senior Manager, Retail Credit to maintain retail loan delinquency and oversees collection activities organization-wide, ensuring adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Administers the approved mortgage broker list and manages relationships with appraisers, notaries, and lawyers, including vetting new relationships.
  • Maintains a deep knowledge of First Credit Union products and services to support informed decision-making.

Required Experience, Knowledge, Skill, and Ability:

  • Secondary School Diploma.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in retail lending, preferably within the Credit Union system.
  • Successful completion of the CCUA Consumer & Residential Mortgage Lending Accreditation* (within 24 months of start date).
  • Proficiency in conducting credit adjudication and underwriting for retail loan applications.
  • Strong understanding of industry regulations, lending laws, and compliance requirements.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities with experience in managing and developing lending teams.
  • Effective communication skills to convey complex financial information and credit decisions clearly.
  • Experience in identifying and implementing process improvements to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in retail lending operations.
  • Knowledge of the local communities that we serve as it pertains to lending.
