Tŝilhqot’in National Government (TNG) seeks to hire a full-time Nen (Water, Lands & Resources) Negotiations Manager to lead our team in  Williams Lake, BC. The successful candidate will join the Tŝilhqot’in Nen Team to support the Tŝilhqot’in Chiefs and the six Tŝilhqot’in communities as they work to achieve lasting reconciliation for the Tŝilhqot’in peoples in their engagement with the Governments of British Columbia and Canada. This is an exciting opportunity to work on cutting-edge nen (land and resource) planning, management and implementation in collaboration with the six Tsilhqot’in communities

The Tŝilhqot’in Nation is a world leader in advancing Indigenous title and rights, as demonstrated by the landmark Aboriginal Title Declaration from the Supreme Court of Canada in 2014. The Nation is implementing a groundbreaking tripartite framework agreement ( Gwets’en Nilt’i Pathway Agreement ) and the Tsilhqot’in Nen Team plays an important role in supporting the Tsilhqot’in Nation on all matters related to water, lands and resources.

The Nen Negotations Manager will be responsible for managing a team of negotiators, community and land planners, professionals and contractors. The successful candidate will have strong people and communication skills, and proven experience managing teams of people to achieve positive outcomes in negotiations. A background in natural resources or lands combined with cultural awareness and sensitivity.

Specific Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Manage as team of negotiators and resource professionals;
  • Provide regular feedback and support to the Nen team members;
  • Lead, coach and mentor community staff, including training and education opportunities;
  • Strategically plan for nen negotiations based on input from community members, the Council of Chiefs and senior staff;
  • Collaborate with and support other TNG managers, including with the TNG Stewardship Department as it manages lands and resource issues;
  • Effectively engage and report to Tsilhqot’in Nation members and leaders from the six communities;
  • Conflict resolution and crisis management as it pertains to water, lands and natural resources;
  • Support transforming how natural resources within the Tsilhqot’in Territory are managed;
  • Develop and be responsible for the department budgets;
  • Effectively engage and strengthen relationships with our partners to bring about the changes required in provincial and federal legislation and policy to achieve Tsilhqot’in goals and objectives;
  • Other duties as required;

Qualifications and Professional Competencies:

  • Managerial experience supervising employees and contractors;
  • Strategic thinker and “doer” with ability to develop and implement strategies and plans based on input from Tsilhqot’in leadership and community members;
  • Demonstrated project-and-personnel-management experience. Mentorship experience is an asset;
  • Excellent communication skills including competent public speaking, professional writing and report preparation;
  • Proven record of successful working relationships with First Nations;
  • Strong initiative, excellent professional judgement and commitment to success;
  • Excellent research, analysis and problem-solving skills;
  • Complete working knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint ;
  • Proven record of successfully leading negotiations with other governments;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Able to maintain confidentiality
  • Valid BC Driver’s License, ability and willingness to travel to remote communities and travel to meetings outside of the region as required;
  • Flexible work schedule to partake in evening engagement sessions and Nation/community events;
