Every day, eleven Canadians learn they have myeloma, a blood and bone marrow cancer with no known cause or cure. But remarkable advances in research are helping patients live longer lives in better health. The Canadian Myeloma Research Group is the only national body dedicated to directly bringing promising new drugs to patients as early as possible and making powerful improvements to available treatments. Our collaborative network of 50+ clinicians, researchers and patients across 30 sites from Vancouver to St. John’s is hopeful we might one day find a cure for this catastrophic disease that claims 1,700Canadians every year.

 

Job Description

Opportunity:

Canadian Myeloma Research Group (CMRG) is seeking a Development and Fundraising Manager to create and implement a fundraising program with a particular focus on Major Gift activities. In this new role, the Development Manager will be responsible for the coordination and implementation of all fundraising activities at CMRG. You will be responsible for all facets of the donor relation cycle including identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, securing, and stewarding Major Gifts. The successful candidate will work to create a robust fundraising program building off of a pre-existing multi-year fundraising plan. You will oversee the annual philanthropic budget and ensure CMRG’s annual philanthropic revenue target is achieved. This role will work with a high degree of independence but will collaborate with other CMRG senior staff on the organization’s strategic thinking to ensure organizational priorities are aligned.

Roles and responsibilities:

• Responsible for the development, coordination, and delivery of all fund development activities, with a primary focus on Major Gift activities

• Develop and implement a Major Giving program building off an existing multi-year Fundraising Plan

• Manage prospecting, donor database and tracking systems.

• Responsible for the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of Major Gifts

• Build relationships with key stakeholders and secure philanthropic commitments from individuals, corporations, and foundations.

• Oversee and execute all donor stewardship activities.

• Develop strategies to grow the fundraising program and meet established revenue goals.

• Provide information and reporting on fund development activities to the operations director and to other stakeholders as required.

• Lead the development and execution of tailored cultivation and solicitation plans for individual donors, corporate partners, and foundation funders, including personalized stewardship and recognition opportunities.

• Provide guidance and support to senior leadership, staff, and volunteers in their fundraising efforts, including training, coaching, and resource development.

• Conduct regular prospect review meetings and pipeline assessments to track progress, identify opportunities for engagement, and adjust strategies as needed.

• Stay abreast of emerging trends and best practices in fundraising, donor relations, and philanthropy, and share knowledge and insights with colleagues to enhance organizational effectiveness.

• Represent CMRG at external events, conferences, and networking opportunities to raise awareness of our mission, cultivate relationships with potential donors, and secure support for our programs and initiatives.

• Prepare compelling grant proposals, sponsorship packages, and fundraising appeals, leveraging data, stories, and impact metrics to demonstrate the value of investing in CMRG's work.

• Work closely with the Communications and Marketing team to ensure alignment between fundraising messaging and branding efforts, as well as to leverage storytelling and digital platforms to engage donors and inspire support.

• Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of donor interactions, gifts, and pledges, ensuring compliance with privacy regulations and fundraising standards.

• Collaborate with finance and operations staff to ensure accurate financial reporting, budget monitoring, and grant compliance, as well as to streamline gift processing and acknowledgement procedures.

• Serve as an ambassador for CMRG within the philanthropic community, fostering relationships with donors, partners, and volunteers to deepen their engagement and investment in our mission.

 

Qualifications Required:

• Post-secondary education or equivalent experience

• CFRE designation would be beneficial.

• 5-10 years of progressively responsible professional fundraising experience

• Experience cultivating, soliciting, securing, and stewarding Major Gifts, ideally for research or related types of projects.

• Financial management experience, including management and oversight of budgets.

• Excellent oral and written communications skills

• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to develop long-term relationships with prospects and donors.

• Demonstrated success in developing and executing comprehensive fundraising strategies that align with organizational goals and priorities.

• Proven ability to think strategically, identify opportunities, and innovate within the fundraising landscape to maximize donor engagement and revenue generation.

• Experience in prospect research and analysis to identify potential major donors, as well as the ability to effectively qualify prospects based on their capacity, interest, and affinity.

• Knowledge of fundraising best practices, trends, and ethical standards, with a commitment to upholding the highest standards of donor stewardship and transparency.

• Familiarity with fundraising software and CRM systems for donor management, reporting, and analysis.

• Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial data, track fundraising metrics, and generate insights to inform decision-making and strategy refinement.

• Experience in event planning and execution, including donor cultivation events, fundraising galas, and virtual campaigns.

• Previous experience working in a healthcare or medical research organization, particularly in the field of oncology or hematology, would be an asset.
