Planning & Development Officer

Nova Scotia is rich in natural resources – including biodiversity, forests, geological resources, provincial parks, and the land we manage. The Department of Natural Resources and Renewables is responsible for the development, management, conservation, and protection of forest, mineral, parks, and wildlife resources and the administration of the province's Crown land. As the Senior Development Officer, you will be responsible for researching, planning, and implementing forestry economic and resources development and trade projects and initiatives, within the mandate of the department.
Performing in-depth research and data analysis on forestry-related topics, including market trends, environmental impact, and technological advancements.
# Developing, facilitating, promoting, researching, and providing expertise on the development and implementation of forest sector-related policy and program initiatives and projects.
# Providing specific natural resource advice/recommendations to the Minister, Deputy Minister, and Executive Council regarding industry and resource development issues.
# Preparing reports, briefing notes, presentations, and correspondence for senior staff, the Minister, Deputy Minister, and Executive Council and Senior Staff.
# Contributing expertise and acting as a senior representative of the Department in government or industry forums and committees.
# Collaborating with the Manager to promote private sector investment in sustainable forestry practices to increase economic output and job creation.
# Identifying and promoting industrial investment opportunities within the forest sector.
# Planning and implementing sector-wide industrial initiatives.
# Fostering collaboration and building partnerships with industry associations, research institutions, and government authorities to drive innovation and growth.
This may be the right opportunity for you if you have a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce or equivalent plus 8 years related experience; Related experience includes experience with international trade, economic or business development, and natural resource management. Professional designations such as PMP, CPA are considered assets. As the ideal candidate you are required to be highly proficient with research techniques, data analysis, forecasts, and budgeting. Previous experience and at least intermediate skills level in MS Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) and/or similar software is a necessity. Additional experience in policy development, stakeholder engagement, and leading/managing projects would be considered an asset. We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.
