Reports to: Program Coordinator

Wage: $23-$25 per hour

Business Advisor for a senior’s employment program is to empower older adults to achieve self-employment goals, contribute to the workforce, and lead fulfilling lives in their later years. The business advisor will prepare and coach the participants toward developing their business plans, finding funding opportunities for startup loans, registering, offering career counseling, organizing skill-building workshops, and fostering partnerships with local employers.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • develops, implements, and oversees EO55+ programs tailored to meet the unique business needs of senior citizens;
  • conducts comprehensive assessments to identify self-employment and business opportunities, skills, and preferences of older adults in the community;
  • offers personalized business counseling and guidance to seniors, assisting them in exploring business options, evaluating their skills and interests, and developing effective business plans;
  • provides comprehensive business plan advising support tailored to the client’s unique needs and goals;
  • facilitates business and other training workshops, seminars, and educational sessions;
  • advocates for age-friendly hiring practices and promote the advantages of employing older workers to potential employers;
  • assists seniors in identifying suitable employment/business opportunities through mentoring, referrals, and networking efforts;
  • provides ongoing business set-up support throughout the application process, including assistance with job applications, interview preparation, and negotiation strategies;
  • coordinates the training of program participants, including scheduling training sessions and assigning instructors as needed;
  • maintains accurate and up-to-date training records in compliance with business funder requirements;
  • conducts regular evaluations of program delivery to ensure adherence to program standards and promptly report any issues to the Program Director;
  • offers guidance to participants interested in registering and launching their own businesses, including assistance in securing start-up capital and developing business plans;
  • provides support in completing business-related documents, such as business proposals, financial statements, and regulatory forms;
  • conducts follow-up visits to participants' business sites to provide ongoing support, review business plans, and assist with any necessary documentation;
  • ensures effective communication with staff and clients; and
  • performs other job-related duties as assigned by the Program Director.

Education:

  • degree in a related field such as business, public policy, social sciences, and public administration, or an equivalent combination of education and considerable related experience; and
  • minimum one year’s experience working with clients from diverse backgrounds to launch new businesses.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • demonstrated working knowledge of business operations in the local community;
  • knowledge of Punjabi and Hindi languages an asset;
  • experience working in a multicultural environment and non-profit/charitable organization;
  • excellent oral, written, facilitation, and interpersonal and communication skills;
  • demonstrated time management skills;
  • ability to work effectively with program staff, volunteers, and non-profit or publicly funded groups, agencies, and organizations;
  • demonstrated understanding of multicultural issues and ability to work in a multicultural environment;
  • ability to function independently, excellent computer skills;
  • be flexible and demonstrate sound work ethics;
  • participation at meetings, conferences, and other events; and
  • proficient in the use of social media.

  • Valid driver’s license and access to a suitable vehicle is required; and
  • Negative criminal record check.
