Job Overview


Parkinson Canada is looking for a Communications Specialist to execute our internal and external communications strategy. They will be part of a marketing & communications team and will have a strategic mindset, excellent writing skills, and an ability to craft a story for owned and earned channels. It’s an opportunity to help build process, structure and strategy, while telling incredible stories, alongside a recently expanded marketing and communications team.


The Communications Specialist will report to the Senior Manager of Communications.

What You’ll Be Doing


External Communications


  • Assist in the execution of our public relations strategy to enhance Parkinson Canada presence on local, provincial, national and international levels.
  • Create proactive and reactive responses for media on issues as needed including developing stories that may relate to research, human interest, policy or events.
  • Build relationships with national and local media in key markets across Canada.
  • Guide development of messaging as it relates to emerging issues, including prepping staff to deliver messaging.
  • Write key messaging, speeches, video scripts, FAQ’s, media releases and advisories, web copy and other written materials as needed.
  • Conduct interviews with people living with Parkinson’s, experts and others to create content for Parkinson Canada channels.
  • Act as media liaison and support senior leadership at events as needed (may require some travel).
  • Contribute to development of consistent messaging for website and for all Parkinson Canada staff to use, that reflects current brand messaging, statistics and more.


Internal Communications


  • Assist in the development of a yearly internal communications strategy and plan.
  • Work collaboratively with leaders across Parkinson Canada to craft and deliver messaging to staff as needed.
  • Compile monthly agenda and speaking notes for staff town hall, in collaboration with administrative and marketing communications team.


Planning, Measurement and Reporting


  • Develop regular cadence to media monitoring, including an internal update on Parkinson Canada mentions.
  • Using Meltwater, measure impact of media and event campaigns throughout the year, by generating coverage reports.
  • Contribute to planning communications priorities and targets on annual basis.
  • Develop communication plans as needed to support various Parkinson Canada projects, working closely with internal clients and the marketing & communications team.


Qualifications


  • University degree in communications, marketing or a related field.
  • 4+ years of experience in communications and/or marketing in agency, non-profit or corporate environment
  • French language knowledge is an asset
