About Us:
The Alberta Family Wellness Initiative (AFWI) was created by the Palix Foundation in 2007 to bridge the gap between the science of brain development and its connection to mental health, addiction, and other disease and disorder throughout the life course. The AFWI partners include the Center of the Developing Child at Harvard University, the University of Oxford, the Government of Alberta, Alberta Health Services, and Alberta post-secondary institutions and community partners. The AFWI has made considerable progress towards moving knowledge into policy and practice through the Brain Story Certification and the Resilience Scale Framework.
Position Overview:
We are seeking an innovative and experienced Scientific Director to lead our initiatives and execute the strategic vision of the AFWI. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in developmental or behavioural neuroscience, public health, or related fields, and will have a passion for knowledge dissemination and practical applications that support system transformation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the scientific direction of the AFWI, ensuring alignment with our mission and goals.
- Provide advice to the Patron and President in scientific and research matters
- Foster partnerships with academic institutions, government agencies, and community organizations to enhance capabilities and share knowledge.
- Oversee the design, execution, and evaluation of projects, ensuring adherence to ethical standards and scientific rigor when relevant
- Communication diverse audiences, including policymakers, practitioners, and the general public, through publications, presentations, and community engagement initiatives.
- Collaborate with the leadership team to develop strategic initiatives that promote the use of research and evaluation in furthering application in policy and practice.
- Mentor and supervise staff, fostering a collaborative environment.
- Stay informed of emerging trends and developments in the fields of childhood development, mental health, addiction and it’s lifelong impacts
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in neuroscience, psychology, public health, or a related field.
- Research experience
- A knowledge and understanding of the neurosciences, research methodologies and science implementation as it pertains to Foundation programming
- Strong leadership abilities and experience managing a team
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders.
- Time management skills and ability to work independently
- Comfortable working in a dynamic and iterative work environment
- Confidence, curiosity and enthusiasm
- Multi-task oriented
