LAB ASSISTANT

KELVIN HIGH SCHOOL

TERM (ASAP TO JUNE 27, 2025)

Under the direction of the Principal, the Laboratory Assistant is responsible for: preparing the lab and experiments for classes; ensuring the lab and all related equipment is cleaned and stored after use; ensuring lab equipment remains in working order; adhering to W.H.M.I.S. standards and policies; providing general assistance to Teachers, and providing First Aid to Teachers and students.

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

LABORATORY PREPARATION

Prepares reagents, calculating the solution's molarity using the periodic table; labels all prepared solutions.

Weighs solutes and solvents, using equipment such as balances, graduated cylinders, pipettes, and volumetric flasks; materials for sterile microbiology experiments using laboratory autoclave; prepares specimens for dissection, as requested and makes written notations as required.

Tests laboratory experiments for accuracy and effectiveness prior to class room use; consults with Teachers regarding problems or unexpected results.

Ensures W.H.M.I.S. and other safety regulations are adhered to.

Co-ordinates all labs requested by Teachers; ensures sufficient equipment, specimens and chemicals are set up and available for class room experiments.

Demonstrates lab experiments for students, as required; performs sample experiments.

Supervises classrooms during Teacher absences as well as during initial stages of experiment; checks in during experiments to see if Teacher/class requires assistance; provides assistance to students, as requested.

EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES

Maintains and services equipment such as balances, microscopes, autoclave; performs minor repairs; notifies teachers of equipment beyond repair capabilities; arranges repairs as required.

Ensures equipment is properly stored and secured at end of each day.

Performs annual inventory of chemicals and equipment, biology specimens and glassware; maintains continuous chemical inventory, ensuring chemicals are properly labeled.

Researches chemical and equipment costs, calling suppliers and examining catalogues; prepares requisitions according to inventory levels and curriculum requirements; arranges for special purchases.

Prepares supply and equipment requisitions, forwarding same to Purchasing; follows up any repair work, ensuring repairs are completed; receives and stores repaired equipment; monitors repair expenses; engraves new equipment.

Maintains petty cash float for local purchases.

MATERIALS AND WORKPLACE SAFETY

Receives ordered chemicals, checking the expiration date of corresponding M.S.D.S sheets; substitutes new

M.S.D.S. sheets for old sheets in Science Hazard Awareness Centres and in school office.

Places old M.S.D.S. sheets in expired M.S.D.S. binder; updates M.S.D.S. dates in computer files.

Ensures all chemicals are clearly labeled; ensures solutions made up are also clearly labeled; ensures storage of chemicals complies with M.S.D.S recommendations.

Disposes of expired chemicals in accordance with M.S.D.S. regulations.

Ensures all safety equipment such as safety goggles, fire extinguishers, chemical spill kits, eyewash stations and deluge showers are in good working order and are accessible to those using lab facilities.

ASSISTANCE TO TEACHER

Performs photocopying; prepares instructional materials as requested; assists with marking tests, lab books and assignments, as well as make-up tests and laboratory experiments as required.

Researches/reviews various science and technological periodicals for curriculum related information; circulates same to science staff, filing materials upon return.

Assists with Science Fair, coordinating equipment, chemicals and other materials; provides advice and assistance regarding safety concerns; provides assistance to students with projects;.

Drafts and forwards letters to obtain Science Fair judges; forwards information and thank you letters; assists with physical set up of student displays and post-Fair clean-up.

Administers First Aid to students and Teachers, as required.

Observes and keeps abreast of W.H.M.I.S. and school policies and procedures, and Winnipeg School Division No. 1 policies and procedures.

Performs other related duties within this class and related classes not exceeding skills and capabilities as required.

Qualifications:

A science degree or diploma from a recognized University, College or Institute is required

A First Aid certificate

Two to three years extensive experience working with young children and/or adolescents with social academic and/or behavioural difficulties using management techniques and strategies

A minimum 2 years of working in a laboratory with experience in W.H.M.I.S. policies and procedures is required

Oral and written communication skills in English are required
