Clinical Lab Assistant (Term)

Term of Employment: October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2025*

Hourly Rate: $29.18 to $38.63 per hour

Location: Pembina Campus 

Hours of Work: Up to 21 hours per week, scheduled between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm

*Term Replacement to cover a Leave of Absence, dates may change. 

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Clinical Lab Assistant (CLA) is responsible for providing community pharmacy instructional support, facility supervision and maintenance, test invigilation, marking objective assessments, and general program area administrative tasks under the directions of the Program Manager or designate. The CLA assists in supporting students’ independent learning, facilitates the inclusion of students in learning opportunities and encourages students to become independent learners and members of the classroom, school, and community. The CLA assists faculty in providing opportunities for student success. The Clinical Lab Assistant will be responsible for supporting community pharmacy laboratory simulation and other learning activities for the Pharmacy Technician Program.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Under the direction of the instructor, and/or Pharmacy Technician Program Lead, support the course delivery, and re-demonstrate community pharmacy laboratory, simulation and other learning activities.Under the direction of the instructor, provide practice/remedial supports to students on a small group or individual basis.Under the supervision of the program instructor, invigilate exams and provide assessment support.As directed by instructor, prepare classroom and simulation lab equipment, supplies, and other learning materials for various learning activities. Oversee lab activities during scheduled clinical practice time and provides feedback and corrections as required.Maintain and clean/sterilize lab equipment, arrange equipment repairs and laundering services, and manage the inventory and supply orders, involving students as relevant to learning activities.Ensure a safe work environment by complying with WHMIS regulations, reinforcing safe patient handling protocols, and adhering to lab rules and other MITT policy and procedures.Reinforce MITT and program policies to students.Foster a co-operative, respectful working relationship with the instructor and work within the parameters of this position.

 Teaching and Learning Support

Provide the following supports for students under the direction of the Program Manager or designate: Monitor students before and after class as assigned or required; Monitor and support student learning during study periods; Assist students with independent learning, lab time, capstone projects etc.; Support student progress in blended learning and online courses; Assist students with attaining their learning goals; Use supportive methodologies to encourage student participation and learning; Assist in the education, development and training of students; Assist students with establishing work priorities and organizing learning materials. Support faculty in the blended/online classroom environment. Support faculty in hands-on learning in the shops, labs or classrooms. Support faculty with objective lab assessments, and data entry to LMS and Faculty Portal. Support faculty with exam administration and invigilation. Assist in reviewing and reinforcing program materials assigned by the instructor. Promote and enforce compliance with health and safety requirements. Follow guidelines and requirements to protect the safety and well-being of students. Assist in reinforcing and enforcing institutional and classroom policies for students. Meet standards of professional and ethical conduct in relation to students, families and colleagues. 

Planning and Preparation

Under the direction of the faculty, prepares and maintains classrooms, shops or labs for before and after use. Monitor and maintains current program and classroom supplies/ inventory levels; processes purchasing orders as required by the program manager or designate Provide access and prepare study/work area for use during independent learning and before and after class. Assist faculty with maintaining records of student attendance where required. Assist faculty with ensuring students have the necessary documentation for work practicums. Liaise with faculty regarding student performance and progress. 

Learning Environment 

Create a positive learning environment by encouraging students to accomplish educational goals. Foster a cooperative, inclusive, respectful working relationship with the faculty and students. Provide the opportunity to receive and act on student feedback. Demonstrate practical classroom management skills. Utilize appropriate and creative educational methods to accommodate the learning needs of individual students. Maintain and clean/sterilize lab equipment, arrange equipment repairs and laundering services, and manage the inventory and supply orders, involving students as relevant to learning activities.Ensure a safe work environment by complying with WHMIS regulations, reinforcing safety protocols, and adhering to lab rules and other MITT policy and procedures.

Interpersonal Relationships 

Communicate with students fairly and consistently and be approachable. Remain mindful of individual differences in an atmosphere of respect and trust.Assist students in meeting their full potential. Communicate and collaborate with other members of the teaching staff. Promote a friendly and safe learning environment.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

A combination of related education and experience may be considered.

A certificate or diploma from an accredited Pharmacy Technician Program - Must maintain currency of practice. Listed as pharmacy technician (RPEBC-PT) with the College of Pharmacists of Manitoba (CPhM).Certificate in Adult Education is considered an asset. 1- 3 years of community pharmacy practice work experience.Compliance with all relevant CCAPP standards, NAPRA competencies, CPTEA educational outcomes, and associated legislation.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

Demonstrated experience with using computers and Microsoft Office.Experience working in an educational setting, preferably within a high school or post-secondary environment, is desired. Experience in supporting learning, including classroom management, is desired. Experience in creating and delivering web-based content using online learning management systems is preferred.
