Electrical Power System Engineer

Location : Onsite Nanticoke, Ontario

Temporary Contract, 18 months


Job Summary

The electrical power system engineer is responsible for designing, installing, testing, and maintaining the power distribution, protection, and control systems for an integrated steel plant. The engineer will work with other engineers, technicians, operators, and contractors to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the plant's electrical equipment and systems.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design and implement power distribution, protection, and control systems for the plant's electrical equipment and systems, such as transformers, generators, motors, switchgear, relays, breakers, cables, and meters.
  • Perform calculations, simulations, and analysis of power system parameters, such as load flow, short circuit, stability, harmonics, and coordination.
  • Prepare and review engineering drawings, specifications, reports, and documentation for power system projects.
  • Conduct testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintenance of power system equipment and systems.
  • Monitor and optimize the performance and efficiency of power system equipment and systems.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, regulations, and best practices for power system engineering.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to other engineers, technicians, operators, and contractors.
  • Coordinate and communicate with internal and external stakeholders, such as management, vendors, customers, and utilities.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for improvement, innovation, and cost reduction in power system engineering.
  • Stay updated with the latest developments and trends in power system engineering and related fields.


Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in power system engineering, preferably in the steel industry or similar heavy industrial environment.
  • Knowledge and experience in power distribution, protection, and control systems, such as transformers, generators, motors, switchgear, relays, breakers, cables, and meters.
  • Knowledge and experience in power system analysis tools, such as ETAP, SKM, PSCAD, or similar.
  • Knowledge and experience in power system testing and commissioning equipment and methods, such as Doble, Megger, Omicron, or similar.
  • Knowledge and experience in power system standards and regulations, such as IEEE, ANSI, NEC, NESC, NFPA, or similar.
  • Proficient in engineering software, such as AutoCAD, MS Office, or similar.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively and efficiently.
  • Ability to travel as required for project assignments and site visits.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent is preferred.
