THE OPPORTUNITY:


We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior System and Network Administrator to join our team. Reporting to the Director of AI & Software Systems, the successful candidate will be responsible for managing, maintaining and scaling our IT solutions, ensuring its reliability, security, and efficiency.


This role requires expertise in general technical problem solving, operating systems, networking, virtualization, cloud computing, storage management, security, scripting, monitoring, self-hosted solutions, and basic application development.


We are looking for a passionate innovator who enjoys exploring new technologies and continuously enhancing our systems, all while adhering to best practices and ensuring stable and secure production environments.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:


Operating Systems:

  • Manage and maintain Linux/Unix and Windows Server environments
  • Perform routine system updates, patches, and configurations
  • Monitor system performance and troubleshoot issues


Networking:

  • Configure and manage network devices such as routers, switches, firewalls, including OPNsense and pfSense
  • Ensure network security and performance through proper configuration and monitoring
  • Troubleshoot network connectivity issues and optimize network performance using network tools such as wireshark, netcat, curl etc.


Virtualization and Cloud Computing:

  • Deploy and manage virtual environments using Proxmox or other hypervisor environments
  • Implement and maintain cloud solutions on AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform
  • Ensure high availability and scalability of cloud services


Storage Management:

  • Configure and manage SAN, NAS, and RAID storage solutions
  • Implement and maintain backup and disaster recovery solutions
  • Monitor storage usage and optimize storage performance


Security:

  • Implement security best practices to protect IT infrastructure
  • Manage firewalls, IDS/IPS, antivirus, and other security tools
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements such as GDPR and HIPAA


Scripting and Automation:

  • Develop and maintain scripts in Bash, PowerShell, Python, or Perl to automate tasks
  • Utilize automation tools like Ansible, Puppet, Chef, or SaltStack
  • Implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions using Terraform
  • Knowledge and experience using relational and non relational databases such as SQL, mongoDB, postgres, cassandra etc.


Monitoring and Performance Tuning:

  • Set up and manage monitoring tools such as Nagios, Zabbix, SolarWinds, or Prometheus
  • Perform system performance tuning and optimization
  • Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions


Self-Hosted Solutions:

  • Install, configure, and maintain self-hosted applications such as web servers (Apache, Nginx), CMS (WordPress, Drupal), email servers (Postfix, Exim), and collaboration tools (Mattermost, Nextcloud)
  • Manage self-hosted version control systems like GitLab or Gitea
  • Implement CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins, GitLab CI, or Travis CI


Application Development and Customization:

  • Develop and customize scripts and applications to meet organizational needs
  • Create and manage APIs for system integration
  • Customize self-hosted applications by developing plugins, modules, and themes


Incident and Problem Management:

  • Respond to system outages and perform root cause analysis
  • Document system configurations, procedures, and changes
  • Provide technical support and resolve issues promptly


Collaboration and Communication:

  • Lead and mentor IT team members
  • Collaborate with other departments to understand and meet their IT needs
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders and provide regular updates on IT projects and issues


QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in system administration or a related role
  • Extensive experience with Linux/Unix and Windows Server operating systems
  • Strong knowledge of networking protocols and devices, including non-enterprise solutions such as OPNsense and pfSense
  • Proficiency in virtualization technologies, including Proxmox, and cloud platforms
  • Experience with storage solutions and backup/recovery systems
  • In-depth understanding of security principles and best practices
  • Proficient in scripting languages and automation tools
  • Experience with monitoring tools and performance tuning
  • Familiarity with self-hosted solutions and basic application development
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Enthusiastic about exploring and implementing innovative technologies, with a keen interest in homelab solutions and continuous improvement of IT infrastructure
