Overview of role:

WestJet is seeking a dynamic and experienced Senior Advisor, Health Programs to join our Employee Health Team in a newly created role. This is an exciting opportunity to collaborate with the Senior Manager Workplace Accommodations, to shape and lead our fitness-for-duty and medical surveillance programs while playing a key role in our corporate health and wellness initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

 

Fitness for Duty:

  • Support the Senior Manager Workplace Accommodation in the development and implementation of Fitness-for-Duty program for safety sensitive roles to ensure employees are physically and mentally fit to perform their duties ensuring alignment with regulatory and organizational standards. This includes reviewing fit-for-duty and restriction concerns, consulting and interpreting medical information, advising on strategies, obtaining necessary documentation, and initiating third-party independent medical testing when needed
  • Collaborate with the Employee Health and HR teams to recommend appropriate accommodations and actions based on fitness assessments including the ones associated with post-offer employment testing

Medical Surveillance:

  • Assist in the creation, implementation, and maintenance of required medical surveillance programs by partnering with Employee Health and Occupational Health & Safety teams to identify and monitor workplace hazards, advise on preventive measures, and ensure that relevant health records are properly maintained

Accommodations & Return to Work:

  • Collaborate on implementing and monitoring complex accommodation and return-to-work plans, including evaluating medical accommodation requests, tracking progress, and recommending actions for a return to full duties or alternate placement
  • Work collaboratively with the Employee Health Team to manage claims, providing opinions on diagnosis, its link to illness/injury, and recommendations for assessment, treatment, and return to work

Health Promotion and Wellness:

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in developing and delivering evidence-based health promotion and wellness programs. This includes creating and delivering health education programs tailored to organizational needs, enhancing WestJetter's overall well-being and productivity
  • Contribute to ad hoc projects/tasks aimed at improving, developing, and implementing health-related initiatives

Qualifications:

 

  • Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with active certification and in good standing with the relevant licensing body
  • Occupational Health Nursing Diploma or Certificate preferred
  • Working knowledge of Occupational Hygiene basic principles
  • Minimum of five years of nursing experience, with focus on occupational medical surveillance and fitness for duty assessments
  • Project/program management experience is an asset
  • In-depth knowledge of regulatory requirements related to occupational health, medical surveillance, and accommodations
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, fostering a positive and cooperative work environment
  • Capacity to work efficiently in fast-paced and dynamic environments, quickly adjusting to changing circumstances and priorities
  • High degree of judgment and discretion in handling confidential and sensitive issues
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills

Location: This role is based at the Calgary Campus, and occasional travel to other bases across the country as needed.
