Our clients include several of the largest oil and gas producers in Canada and worldwide. Summary:  The Sr. Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) Tech plays a pivotal role in supporting the I&C Department Manager by overseeing day-to-day technical operations, leading project teams, and ensuring the successful execution of projects within the department. The role is both technical and managerial, bridging the gap between the department's strategic objectives and the technical work performed by the engineers and technicians.  
Key Responsibilities
  • Providing technical guidance and oversight on I&C projects, ensuring that engineering practices meet the required standards and project specifications. Lead by example in solving complex technical problems and making critical engineering decisions.
  • Assisting in the planning, execution, and delivery of I&C projects, including resource allocation, scheduling, and budget tracking. Working closely with the Department Manager to ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
  • Directly supervising a team of engineers and technicians globally, including assigning tasks, monitoring performance, and providing feedback. Responsible for ensuring the team is productive, motivated, and effectively contributing to the department's goals.
  • Identifying training needs within the team and coordinating with the Department Manager to develop and implement training programs. Mentor junior and global workshare staff by helping them develop their technical skills and advance their careers.
  • Ensuring that all work carried out by the team adheres to internal quality standards as well as external regulatory requirements through the development and implementation of quality assurance processes and documentation.
  • Acting as a technical liaison between the team and clients or other discipline departments, ensuring clear communication and understanding of project requirements, progress, and outcomes. 
  • Encouraging innovation within the team by staying abreast of industry trends, new technologies, and best practices in instrumentation and control engineering. Lead efforts to improve processes, tools, and methodologies to enhance project delivery and operational efficiency, such as generating and maintaining department standards, procedures and specifications.
  • Identifying potential risks to project schedules, budgets, and quality, and working with the team and Department Manager to mitigate these risks.
  • Ensuring that all activities and projects comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations, promoting a culture of safety within the team.
  • Providing regular reports to the Department Manager on project progress, team performance, and any issues or challenges that arise, contributing to the strategic planning and decision-making processes.
  • Generate engineering hour estimates, resource loading and forecasting.
  • Ensure effective use of global workshare to meet corporate requirements.

Skills & Abilities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey complex technical information to non-technical stakeholders, as well as to facilitate effective team collaboration.
  • Well experienced in the principles and applications of instrumentation and control systems in industry settings, including knowledge of current technologies, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Proficient in identifying problems, analyzing possible solutions, and making decisive, informed decisions to resolve issues effectively.
  • Leadership, mentorship, and supervisory skills.
  • Keen awareness of budget, management of change, schedule constraints and safety.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Effectively resolve interdisciplinary issues, or concerns that arise within a team environment.
  • Broad exposure to natural gas, conventional oil and heavy oil facility design and construction.
  • Designing and developing control systems by creating strategies that manage, monitor, and ensure the safe and efficient operation of equipment and processes, while ensuring that all parts of the control system communicate effectively with each other and with other systems within the facility. 
  • Troubleshooting, problem solving and resolving instrumentation and control system issues from concept design through to operation.
  • Creating and supervising detailed documentation for instrumentation and control systems including but not limited to instrument datasheets, architectures, wiring diagrams, piping and instrument diagrams, material requisitions, technical specifications, shutdown keys, and narratives.
  • Overseeing material requisitions for specifying and sourcing instruments and control system hardware. 
  • Knowledge of functional safety engineering. 
  • Knowledge of SmartPlant Instrumentation (Intools).
  • Successful candidate will be Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) or Licenced Professional Engineer (P.L. Eng) within the province of Alberta (preferred) or Certified Engineering Technologist (CET).
  • Controls Engineering degree or related Industrial Instrumentation Technology.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering or scientific discipline with advanced knowledge in Instrumentation Engineering.
  • Minimum 15+ year’s oil and gas experience (with EPCM background).


Education & Qualifications
  • Successful candidate will be Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) or Licenced Professional Engineer (P.L. Eng) within the province of Alberta (preferred) or Certified Engineering Technologist (CET).
  • Controls Engineering degree or related Industrial Instrumentation Technology.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering or scientific discipline with advanced knowledge in Instrumentation Engineering.
  • Minimum 15+ year’s oil and gas experience (with EPCM background).
