Who we are 

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) works at the centre of the province’s power system, ensuring Ontarians have access to reliable and cost-effective electricity when and where they need it. We operate the province’s electricity grid 24/7, design, run and oversee the wholesale electricity markets, and plan and prepare to meet Ontario’s electricity needs – now and into the future.

The opportunity

The Senior Analyst is accountable to the Supervisor, Contract Management in the Legal Resources and Corporate Governance (LRCG) division of the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). The Senior Analyst will primarily focus on renewable energy facilities (, solar PV, wind, waterpower, etc.) and will provide value-added technical and commercial analysis for the management of contracts. The Senior Analyst will provide analytical support and recommendations to ensure that contract management requirements are fulfilled, and that documents and processes are followed to provide the best possible value to the IESO, Ontario’s power system, and Ontario’s ratepayers and taxpayers.

What you’ll be doing

Support and manage contract processes, ensuring that all obligations are fulfilled in accordance with the contract requirements, culminating in successful commercial operation of facilities and post-commercial operation compliance. Provide input and analysis into quantifying, mitigating, and contractually allocating risk based on understanding of risks such as permitting, financing, construction, performance, fuel, market and political. Regularly use and maintain online contract database to manage ongoing contractual matters and to ensure compliance. Effectively manage contract issues by meeting with IESO staff, respective contract counterparties, and when applicable, external agencies/organizations (, Local Distribution Companies, Ministry, transmitters, etc.) Assist in the development of standard principles, strategies and processes for existing contracts. Advise on systems and procedures and recommend changes to support the successful management of contracts. Provide input and analysis into quantifying, mitigating, and contractually allocating risk based on the understanding of risks such as permitting, financing, construction, performance, fuel, market and political factors. Develop standard documents/templates to be used by contract counterparties and make recommendations to improve internal processes and where absent develop the necessary tools. Provide updates, reports, and presentations to Supervisor on a regular basis and senior management as required. Support Supervisor with facility amendments or contract negotiations as required. Assist in the development of negotiation principles, strategies, and processes for existing contracts.

Other Responsibilities

Interface with others – internally with the Legal, Planning, Conservation, Resource Adequacy, Corporate Services, and other IESO Departments; externally with Government and its agencies, such as the Ministry of Energy, Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, Local Distribution Companies, and with respective contract counterparties. Conduct research on topics and issues related to electricity supply resources and renewable energy generation. Prepare and assist in the development of budgets and schedules. Assist with projects within LRCG or in other IESO departments. This includes facilitating meetings with other IESO departments. Demonstrate leadership and mentor, advise, and guide less experienced staff ( junior analysts, co-op students, etc.)

What you'll need to succeed

The education required to complete the responsibilities associated with the position is typically obtained through 4 years of university training. Knowledge of Ontario electricity including the renewable energy sector and regulatory environment. Knowledge of the technical aspects of electricity generation, including renewable forms of electricity generation ( solar PV, wind, waterpower, etc.) Understanding of the various generation contracts and programs used by the IESO, (such as the Feed-In Tariff program, the Renewable Energy Standard Offer program, etc.) including the rationale and importance for each, as well as the various provisions in the contracts. Ability to work effectively within a group and must be able to effectively coordinate with IESO staff and external stakeholders. Project management and project scheduling experience with an emphasis on being a self-directed, highly motivated individual. Demonstration of excellent analytical, financial modeling (using excel/VBA, Tableau, etc.), problem solving and presentation skills – able to analyze raw data, draw conclusions and develop practical recommendations. Demonstration of strong understanding of business principles and processes as they relate to power generation technology. Demonstration of negotiation skills and ability to work with contract counterparties in a challenging environment. Ability to generate high quality reports and power point presentation materials. Strong planning and coordinating skills to organize own priorities and workflow. Honed interpersonal skills, comfortable presenting findings internally or externally. Knowledge of IESO Market Rules. Knowledge of contract management and project management principles and practices. Must be analytical, systems-oriented, and driven to improve processes and take initiative to highlight opportunities. Must be detail oriented and must be able to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced, challenging environment. Communication – excellent oral, written and presentation skills are a must including interfacing with external consultants and senior management within IESO and contract counterparties.

The IESO offers a hybrid work model program to most of our employees, based on business needs. Individuals participating in the program can work an average of three days per week remotely within Ontario. It also offers three flex weeks when individuals can work remotely within Ontario .
