Who We Are
Research Operations supports the institution’s research mission – providing a highly coordinated suite of services that cover all aspects of the research life-cycle. The Institutional Strategic Awards (ISA) team – a core part of Research Operations – focuses on supporting SFU’s largest research proposals, nominations, and projects. Complementing our research development specialists, ISA fields a team of Research Project Managers who help coordinate complex funding applications, implement our successful grants, support our top researchers, and onboard new research initiatives, such as the Civic Innovation Lab.
About the Role
You will play an essential role in ensuring the success of the Civic Innovation Lab, a partnership between SFU and the City of Burnaby that advances practical solutions for the city’s most pressing urban issues, from diversity and housing to sustainable growth and environmental challenges caused by climate change. As part of the Research Project Manager role, you will support collaboration and interaction between city staff, SFU students and researchers, faculty and industry consultants, and community stakeholders. You will manage the process of defining joint initiatives that align with SFU’s and Burnaby’s strategic goals, seeking federal and provincial funding to support research projects, and then managing them through to successful delivery. You will work closely with SFU’s Partnerships Hub to build and grow the relationship with Burnaby. You may also provide project management support to other research projects at the university.
You bring experience in the management and administration of research contracts, grants, and networks in a university, government, or non-profit setting. You understand the importance of intersectoral partnered research within the research ecosystem. You enjoy applying project management principles and methodologies to address challenges and implementing workflows grounded in best practices. You are a resourceful problem-solver who can anticipate project needs/risks and adapt to rapidly-evolving and uncertain situations. You have a service-oriented mindset and take pride in creating value and delivering results for your clients. You prioritize and value relationships and have a strong track-record of collaborating and bringing people together.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Science or Applied Sciences, or other relevant discipline, and three years related experience in the administration and development of research contracts, grants, and networks, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Excellent knowledge of budget management and administration in an academic setting. Excellent knowledge of scientific research grants and contract funding requirements. Excellent knowledge of University research and governmental funding agency research policies, rules, regulations, and best practices. Excellent project management skills. Excellent leadership, organizational, quantitative, analytical, communication, interpersonal, time management, and problem-solving skills.What We Offer
