THE PERKS

COMPENSATION – A rewarding career with an earning potential that matches your ambition

Work with a driving school that gets 15,000+ student enrollments every year. Starting competitive hourly rate of $35.00 (in-vehicle instruction time) with the potential to increase earnings up to an additional $7.00 per hour from bonuses. Additional $1.00 per hour with the use of a Luxury or Hybrid vehicle (Luxury vehicle as defined by J.D Power & Associates). A fuel subsidy paid as an additional hourly amount on top of your hourly rate (This rate fluctuates based on fuel prices).

A dedicated marketing team combined with a large student base so you can focus on providing the best driving instruction experience for our members. Our corporate registries team can provide all the information you need with starting your own business to help you make sure all the i’s are dotted and t’s are crossed. As a successful applicant, we have a team of Senior Driving Instructors that will invest their time in ensuring you receive extensive training to acquire your driving instructor licence (in 3 months or less) and become a top-class instructor with a safety focus for our students.  Learning workshops twice a year to ensure you’re always at the top of your game.

Make your own hours and find the work-life balance you’ve been craving. We provide the students, you reach out to coordinate a time that works best for both sides. The autonomy and freedom of operating your own small business, backed by the brand and support of AMA.

WHAT YOU’LL DO AS AN INSTRUCTOR:

Report to the Senior Instructor (think of AMA almost like a board member or investor in your small business). Provide quality vehicle instruction to students, following AMA’s instruction requirements and customer service standards. Provide constructive feedback on student drivers’ abilities, helping them develop the confidence and skills necessary to become licensed, safe drivers for life. Be responsible for student scheduling and submission of daily paperwork. Follow Alberta Transportation guidelines and policies for driving instructors. Be available after school, evenings and weekends, to meet students' scheduling needs.

OUR PROCESS:

Step 1 – Apply online to register your interest. We encourage you to include a cover letter describing your interest in this career, your passion for any particular aspects of the position, and any relatable experience that will help you hit the ground running Our Talent Scouts will review and you’ll go through our standard recruitment process.

Step 2 – Once you are successful going through our recruitment process, AMA will invest in training you with the skills required to be a successful driving instructor with 4 classroom (in-person or virtual) instruction sessions, 20 hours of hands-on training with a Senior Instructor using an AMA vehicle, practice exams, and self-study training materials.

Step 3 - After the completion of training, a consensus between yourself and the team will determine your readiness for the written and practical examination to acquire your Provincial Vehicle Instructor Licence from Alberta Transportation.

Step 4 - Once you have acquired your Licence, we’ll help you get started with setting up your small business. This is when you’ll need to get started with the following:

You’ll have a vehicle that’s no more than six years old. You’ll update your vehicle with the required brakes, mirrors, removable roof signs, and door magnets. The latter two are provided for free by AMA, while the brakes and mirrors cost $456.78 (including tax). Should you decide to end your contract, we’ll buy them back You’ll obtain the required SEF 6D Endorsement insurance coverage for driving instructors. AMA Insurance can provide this for our instructors at an estimated $545.00 per year (subject to a review of your personal insurance and driving history) You’ll set up a small business through a registry (incorporation) at an estimated cost of $550.00.

Step 5 – Training on our internal systems for you to schedule lessons, communicate progress with students and their parents, completion of payroll, and use of training material.
SUMMARY OF REQUIREMENTS:

You have your Provincial Vehicle Instructor Licence from Alberta Transportation. (Don’t worry, training will be provided to suitable candidates that don’t have this certification.) You have a clean driver’s abstract. A vehicle no more than six years old. Required start up costs after the completion of training and acquiring your instructor licence (vehicle add-ons, SEF 6D Endorsement insurance, and incorporating).
