Position Summary

The Senior Instructional Designer will leverage their knowledge and experience with curriculum development, learning theories, educational technologies, and best practices in online learning to coordinate projects through Program Quality at Seneca. 

The incumbent will collaborate with various stakeholders to design curriculum for programs and courses, leading the development team through program modifications, program reviews, and new program development for all Seneca credentials. 

The Senior Instructional Designer will be required to ensure that the curriculum aligns with Ministry, Credential Validation Services (CVS), and Post-Secondary Education Quality Assessment Board (PEQAB) requirements and standards and will engage with these external bodies to support program approvals.  The incumbent will work with a high level of expertise and professionalism. They will design and maintain the Program Quality (PQ) website and support its communication platforms and strategies. 

Responsibilities


Curriculum development

  • Guides and collaborates with faculty and/or Subject Matter Experts (SME), Chairs, and members of the Program Quality team to articulate the learning outcomes, instructional objectives, assessment strategies, and an overall design strategy to engage students in meaningful learning experiences in programs and courses through new program development and program review processes.  
  • Leads academic areas and faculty teams in the modification of programs (minor and major), supporting required approvals and consultations.
  • Coordinates and assists with the planning and managing of curriculum development projects.
  • Leads the development team in the design and development of program and course curriculum, delivered in multiple modalities. 
  • Uses a variety of approaches and tools to create an innovative curriculum, aligned with interactive and experiential learning, including interactive and customized animations, “real-life” simulations, graphics, artwork and visual representations of learning tasks, audio-visual media for online instruction, web pages and other eLearning materials, as required.
  • Supports the integration of mobile learning applications for face-to-face, hybrid, flexible, and fully online programs and courses. 
Program Quality 
  • Designs and hosts relevant training and workshops related to curriculum development, new program development, program review, and/or program modifications, independently or in conjunction with internal partners. This includes presenting at external events and/or conferences.
  • Consults with other departments on campus on issues that directly or indirectly relate to curriculum development (e.g., learning outcomes, graduate outcomes, pathways, curricular mapping, instructional plans, course evaluations, rubrics, etc.)
  • Provides guidance and feedback to members of the development team related to curriculum development for new and existing programs.
  • Supports specialized projects in program delivery and the effective use of educational technologies (i.e.: Applied Research, funded initiatives, etc.)
  • Develops resources that build capacity in curriculum development and design for new and existing programs, including program modifications.
  • Investigates and pilots new approaches to curricular development, program delivery, pathways, instructional design, and educational technologies. 
  • Uses data gathered from students, industry, SMEs, learning analytics, C-IDEA, and other sources, to identify and act on opportunities for program enhancements.
  • Participates in joint sessions offered by various departments throughout Seneca (e.g., new faculty orientation sessions, T&L Days, Micro-teaching, Adobe Creative Jam, program review workshops, Program Quality events etc.)
  • Maintains the Program Quality website.
  • Researches, assesses, and implements best practices in online learning design and delivery.
Qualifications

Education

  • Minimum completed four (4) year degree preferably in curriculum and/or Instructional Design, Education, Adult Teaching, Educational Technology, or a related field.
  • Certificates or related courses in any of the following areas would be an asset: curricular development, instructional design, project management, LMS, multimedia, Adobe Creative Cloud, and Articulate Storyline.

Experience

  • Minimum five (5) years of practical experience in instructional design, program/course development (face-to-face, hybrid, flex, and online), and program quality. 
  • Curriculum development, instructional design, or teaching experience within a post-secondary institution is preferred. 

Skills

  • Strong experience and understanding of curriculum development and program design. 
  • Demonstrated facility in implementing pedagogically sound and creative approaches to instructional design.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, including managing multiple projects and deadlines with competing priorities.
  • Ability to work independently to solve problems and as a team creatively and effectively.
  • Proven skill in communicating effectively and building relationships with faculty and industry partners.

Note: A skills assessment test will be administered during the recruitment process.

A combination of relevant experience and education may be considered as equivalent to the above requirements in the event that there are no internal applicants that meet the qualifications as posted.   Equivalency will be assessed by the talent acquisition team.
