About the School of Trades & Skills

The School of Trades & Skills is dedicated to creating the next generation of skilled trades workers. Working closely with industry, the School provides learners with education in a variety of trades and apprenticeships using the newest equipment. The School is also home to the Olds College Brewery. Fields of study offered within the School of Trades & Skills include: Brewmaster and Brewery Operations, Hospitality and Tourism, Trades, Apprenticeships & Pre-Employment, Transitional Employment Program, and Farrier Science.

The Opportunity - Instructional Assistant, Trades & Apprenticeship programs

Part-time, 0.8 FTE but is full-time hours during the academic year, with the summers off.

This position is responsible for assisting instructors in the creation of the learning environment leading to student success. Preparing, distributing, and demonstrating equipment and material; assisting students; and performing additional tasks as required, are all regular parts of this positions day to day

Key Job Functions:

Provide direct support to Instructors in the Trades and Apprenticeship programs.Support the delivery of Instruction by:Ordering, purchasing, inventory update of materials and supplies for assigned classesCo-ordinate and/or carry out the collection, preparation of materials/ supplies required for instructionSet up and take down labsPrepare and maintain materials for student study purposesMaintain required recordsProvide in-class and lab assistance, not involving direct instructionAssist in exam monitoringParticipate as a member of Instructional Support Teams and other College groups/ teamsAssist with College events, promotion and recruiting activities

Requirements:

Journeyperson Certification in Heavy Equipment or Ag Equipment with a minimum of three (3) years of related experience as a Journeyperson. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.Self-motivatedStrong computer skillsAdept communication and problem-solving abilitiesStrong organization skillsAbility to work on a teamWork independently with minimal supervision

Conditions of Employment:

May be required to do heavy lifting and repetitive physical work.Some work outside of regular College operating hours may be required.A satisfactory current Criminal Reference check.Must respect and actively promote health and safety policies.
