OVERVIEW:

Reporting to the Facilities and Maintenance Manager, the primary focus of the Controls Engineering Specialist is to support and continuously improve all aspects relating to the production and processing of composite utility poles. As a member of the RS team, this position will support an organizational culture that cares for other's well-being through best practices in health and safety, in addition to the company's values of respect, integrity, quality, teamwork and professional growth.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Champion all automation and controls programming on plant equipment including PLC programming, motor controls, HMI's, filament wind programs and servo controls to maximize production capabilities
  • Acquire a thorough understanding of the filament winding process in terms of the polyurethane chemistry and glass fiber handling and conditioning requirements in order to be capable of quickly identifying and addressing root causes of manufacturing problems as well as effectively implement continuous improvements
  • Lead larger electrical projects for equipment upgrades, installs or repairs
  • Periodic support to the Production and Maintenance departments for trouble shooting electrical issues as they arise
  • Review equipment breakdown history and determine repeat problems. Work with the skilled trades or others to eliminate these items by either replacing unsuitable components/structures/mounting locations or institute PM to prevent conditions from occurring that lead to component failures
  • Maintain all equipment electrical documentation and PLC/servo/robot program backup copies
  • Support the manufacturing electronic data collection systems
  • Modify the above documentation and programs in order to remedy equipment problems or improve performance and/or machine safety
  • Assist the Maintenance department if required in the determination of training plans for Electrical maintenance staff
  • Advise management of equipment compliance to applicable regulations and requirements
  • Adhere to all safety procedures and PPE requirements
  • Work with the maintenance team to maximize equipment uptime and reliability
  • Ensure critical spare parts inventory is monitored and maintained as needed
  • Assist in the research, trial/development, selection of new processes and equipment to improve the production process
  • Lead continuous improvement activities
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment
  • Comply with all Company Safety rules, Provincial and Federal Rules and Regulations
  • Other duties as assigned

TRAINING / QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or similar required
  • Minimum 5 years' experience within a manufacturing environment as an Electrical Controls Engineer or in a Design and Programming role at a machine tool builder
  • Experience with AutoCad and electrical schematic design and drawing
  • Experience with Siemens PLC, HMI, and VFD preferred
  • Experience with Allen-Bradley preferred
  • Experience with Aveva InTouch HMI software preferred
