Youth Justice Committees are based on principles and philosophies inspired by Indigenous legal traditions, and centre on human connectedness. Restorative justice understands conflict as a breakdown of interpersonal relationships. Thus, restorative justice processes are intended to restore those relationships through equal and meaningful input from all impacted individuals.

Our Youth Justice Committees include the young person, those impacted, and community volunteers to support the young person in taking accountability for their actions, to repair the harm caused, and to work to address the contextual factors that led to the incident. Participation is voluntary and the young person must accept responsibility for their actions in order to be accepted into the program.

Requirements

WAYS YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE

Co-facilitate restorative justice conferences with youth in conflict with the law and where appropriate, their family members, supports, community members, and those impacted by the conflict. The purpose is to repair harm caused to those impacted; to identify and address any extenuating circumstances that led to the choices being made; and to support the young person in taking accountability for their own actions in the conflict.  You will also contribute to the development of a plan that is responsive to the youth’s needs and seeks to repair the harm caused.

WHO YOU ARE

  • Aged 18+
  • Live or work in Scarborough or York Region. Involvement is contingent on having representation from the communities that we serve.
  • Experience engaging with diverse populations and an ability to apply a culturally responsive lens to all interactions, including program implementation and capacity-building with young people
  • Commitment to practicing within an anti-racist/anti-oppression, trauma-informed framework
  • Knowledge of the principles, concepts and current best practices in the area of restorative justice and conflict resolution.
