Under the direction of the Manager, Correctional Services, and as part of a team, this position carries out the day to day operational and program activities of the Whitehorse Correctional Centre. The Correctional Officer will work various shifts and is responsible for maintaining security, safety, good order, discipline and care of adult inmates by providing orientation, direction, guidance and programming. The focus is to engage the inmates in a process by modeling pro-social behavior that provides maximum opportunity for change in an environment that is productive and supportive and in which they are treated in a respectful, fair and equitable manner. This position is classified as a Peace Officer under the Criminal Code of Canada.

Rate of pay for the first eight weeks will be $29.57 per hour (IS06) and after successful completion of eight weeks of training, it will increase to $37.19 per hour (IS12).

Grade 12 or equivalent Proficient speaking, reading and writing in English Experience applying and enforcing rules and regulations Experience giving direction, coaching, mentoring, and providing feedback to individuals and/or groups. Post-secondary coursework and/or training in criminology, justice, corrections, social services, or another related field would be an asset. Experience in Security, Law Enforcement, Supervisory or Customer Services roles may be considered as an asset.

Candidates who have education and experience equivalent to the essential qualifications listed above may be equally considered.

Conditions of Employment:

Have and maintain:

Valid security and vulnerable sector clearance Successful completion of the Corrections Officer Physical Abilities Test (COPAT), FITCO, or PARE. We will accept test results obtained within the 1-year period prior to the start date. Valid medical clearance (required prior to first day of work) Valid Class 5 driver’s licence (required prior to first day of work) Valid First Aid and CPR certification (must be obtained within 6 months of hire)

Job Requirements:

Rotating shift work including weekends and statutory holidays Occasional travel within and outside the Territory Heavy lifting Wearing a uniform

Hiring Timeline:

Interviews: July COPAT: August Tentative Start Date: September 9, Six weeks of classroom training - Corrections Officer Basic Training (COBT) Two weeks (minimum) of shadowing, which may include day, evening, weekend, and statutory holiday shifts.

If you successfully complete this initial training & assessment, you may be given further paid on-the-job Casual employment to a maximum of six months (including these eight weeks of training), after which, you may be considered for hire as an Auxiliary On-Call Corrections Officer I and eligible for future Permanent Correctional Officer I opportunities.
