About the Opportunity

The Department of Psychiatry at Dalhousie University is recruiting for a substantive full-time psychiatrist for Nova Scotia Health’s (NSH) Central Zone Community Mental Health and Addictions (CMHA) Program.

This position is 1.0 FTE based in Dartmouth City CMHT with the flexibility to work at other CMHT locations subject to service needs (Cole Harbour and Cobequid/Hants CMHTs).

The Mental Health Community General Adult Services are actively seeking candidates proficient in Geriatric Psychiatry to augment their service offerings. The ideal candidate will possess specialised training and experience in Geriatric Psychiatry, enabling them to seamlessly integrate services and administer tailored care to senior patients within the framework of General Adult services. A desirable qualification/skill would include completion of a subspecialty residency training or fellowship program in Geriatric Psychiatry, ensuring the ability to provide comprehensive care to both senior patients and the standard adult population. This unique skill set will enable the candidate to effectively address the diverse needs of older adults within the broader context of General Adult mental health services.

The Department of Psychiatry is a mid-sized clinical academic department within the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Faculty work as members of multidisciplinary teams within the Nova Scotia Health Mental Health and Addiction Program to provide general psychiatric services to patients primarily in the Central Zone and specialty services to patients across the province.

Responsibilities

Roles and Responsibilities:
To be the Attending or Consultant physician to ambulatory patients in the CMHA Program.

Conduct, order and ensure appropriate psychiatric assessments, appropriate psychosocial and laboratory investigations, and pharmacological & psychosocial interventions as per current standard practice.

Take part in a psychiatry on-call schedule as required within the clinical program unless specifically exempted.

Share in the short-term coverage of other services as needed during holidays or illness of other department members.
 

Experience working within an interdisciplinary team to provide care and treatment for persons with moderate to severe psychiatric disorders.

Clinical duties:

  • As directed by the head of the section of community psychiatry at Dalhousie University
  • Clinical direct and indirect care as part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Clinical "desk-side" teaching and didactic education
  • Clinical administration
  • Include on-call service
  • Involve supervision of junior staff including residents and clinical clerks
  • Support research as needed (and conduct it if personally desired)

 

Educational Duties: Didactic teaching at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing medical education level as determined in discussion with the director of education, Department of Psychiatry.

Expected Hours

FTE details: 90% (0.9 FTE) for clinical and 10% (0.1 FTE) for research, teaching and CPD

 

Qualifications

Eligibility:  Fellowship in Psychiatry, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or equivalent as determined by the Department of Psychiatry; eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia. 

Start date - October 01, 2024.

Desirable Skills: Geriatric Psychiatry Subspecialty Residency training or Fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry.

Research:  Research and other scholarly innovation are encouraged; candidates who have a sufficient track record in mental health research may be eligible for protected research time depending on agreement with the Department of Psychiatry’s research and executive leadership.

Remuneration is based upon a highly competitive Academic Funding Plan, which pays for time spent in clinical service, teaching and research. Successful candidates will receive academic rank commensurate with qualifications and experience as per university protocols.
