Rate of Pay: Payband J (Start Rate: $ per hour)

Preference will be given to qualified employees within the Full Time Support Staff bargaining unit, Appendix D (in the role for 6 consecutive months) and RPT employees who have passed probation at Mohawk College.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Career Development & Planning, and in alignment with Mohawk College’s mission and values, the incumbent fosters student engagement and success through the coordination and delivery of student professional development and career advising services. The Career Advisor is responsible for delivery of career information, job search skills and employment support to the non-co-op undergraduate and graduate population of students, encompassing all academic programs and all campuses.

Using a developmental model of advising, the duties will include: ensuring students and recent graduates are provided with the career and employment supports they require to achieve success in their employment goals; providing students and recent graduates assistance with career clarification, job search strategies, cover letter and resume writing, resume critiquing, interview preparation, employment application forms, informational interviews, networking and recruitment events and current labour market information; providing supports and services in both a personalized manner and through workshops/presentations.

The Career Advisor organizes and recruits employers for Career Fairs, Lunch and Learns and Meet the Grad/Employer Events, as well as develops relationships with academic areas in order to assist students, employers and faculty in understanding current labour market needs and trends and develop employment opportunities.

This role will be focused on supporting graduating students in their transition to the workplace.

What you’ll be doing:

Preparing Students for Employment

Develops and delivers in-class presentations to instruct students from any college program on a variety of job search topics, and departmental services. Provides campus-wide seminars and workshops on a variety of job search topics, particularly at key times in the semester. Provides one-on-one service to students and recent graduates by appointment or drop in, or virtually, on all job search topics, in particular, resume and cover letter critiquing and mock interviews, and to develop strategies to overcome sensitive issues related to individual employment barriers. The Advising Model defines the scope of practice for ‘advisors’ to include ‘informational’ and ‘explanatory’ but primarily ‘developmental’ advising. It does not include the practices of ‘mentoring’ or ‘counselling’. Researches and develops resources, including student tip sheets and information sheets to assist students and graduates to develop effective job search strategies, and to assist employers to use our services.

Liaising with Employers

Ensures distribution of postings to appropriate programs, campuses and faculty. Co-ordinates on and off-campus recruitment efforts and meets employer needs as requested. Updates and improves resources on a continuous basis. Maintains a close working relationship with Co-op staff to exchange short-term and long-term job opportunities as appropriate and as the need arises. Arranges guest speakers to allow students to explore all options, ex. entrepreneurship information sessions. Develop opportunities for Part-time/Seasonal/Summer Employment. Organizes employer/student networking events to develop networking skills, provide career clarification and potential employment opportunities.

Liaising with Program Deans, Coordinators, Faculty and Staff

Provides services presentations and the opportunity to take advantage of in-class seminars on a variety of job search topics to academic areas. Meets with program faculty and staff to fact-find, inform, problem-solve and/or plan strategies when appropriate to best meet student and graduate needs. Utilizes student services within the college and the community to support successful transition to the workplace; maintains up-to-date awareness of all services for students. Prepares reports and attends program Advisory Committee meetings to share employment opportunities. Works closely with other career service providers on campus including counselling and career coaching.

Markets and Promotes Graduate & Student Employment Services

Markets and promotes services internally to students, recent graduates, staff and faculty through the department website, Advisory Committee meetings, information sessions, job fairs, common hour workshops and personalized emails. Markets and promotes services externally to employers through individual contacts and special community events, Chamber of Commerce events. Researches and develops resources including student tip sheets and information sheets to assist students and graduates to develop effective job search strategies, and to assist employers to use our services.

What you’ll bring to the role:

At minimum, candidates must meet one of the following two educational requirements: Bachelor of Education; OR a three-year post-secondary diploma/degree plus a certificate, diploma or professional designation in: Education, Student Affairs/Services, Career Development, Personal Coaching, or Counselling Techniques. Minimum of five (5) years of comparable experience in an educational, human resources, employment service or counselling area. Significant experience working with students or job seekers is required. Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. The ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse students, employees, and communities.
