Teacher Assistants

The Lax Kw'alaams First Nation has an immediate opening for a full-time Teacher Assistant. This position will assist students individually or in small groups through the implementation of educational programs directed by the teachers/Special Education Coordinator, etc. You will contribute to the educational plans by providing input in the design of programs. You will also assist teachers in student assessment and evaluation through observation, recording, and/or data collection.
Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
- Promote inclusion of all students through effective communication and involvement with all staff and students.
- Manage difficult situations with a minimum of disruption.
- Assist the teacher/Special Education Resource teacher in implementing the programs for students with special needs.
- Assist the teacher/Special Education Resource teacher in the monitoring, preparing, and evaluating of student progress through the use of a daily log book and/or other observational/recording instruments.
- Assist when necessary, to meet with representatives of other agencies to share appropriate information about students.
- Assist and support classroom teachers in classroom management and strategies.
- Assist with the development of Individual Education Plans (IEP) and may attend Individual Placement and Review Committee meetings as part of a team.
- Ensure the safety of the students by utilizing proper techniques for positioning equipment and wheelchairs, and for lifting students, including the use of a lift device when necessary.
- Accompany and support students on field trips when deemed necessary.
- Help students enhance their self-esteem and promote confidence and independence.
- Assist in updating and maintaining student records and progress according to the school and Ministry of Education policies and regulations. Assist in monitoring student academic progress and provide support as needed.
- Assist with completing or facilitating educational assessments and tests for students.
- Assist with completing annual workplan and updates. Assist with other reports as required.
- Perform other tasks within the scope of the position.
Education, Experience and Knowledge:
- A Grade 12 Diploma and a minimum of a 10-month college/certificate program in teaching assistance, educational assistance or another social science.
- At least 1 year of experience in a related field.
- A valid first-aid certificate or willingness to obtain.
- Related experience working with children/youth.
- Previous classroom experience is essential. Must demonstrate experience in a First Nation school setting.
- Must have general knowledge of the educational system, learning techniques, socialization processes, attitudes, values, aspirations and expectations of the Lax Kw’alaams Band.
- Proven record of professionalism, punctuality, flexibility, dependability, and reliability. Strong communication skills.
- Highly motivated and able to work independently; must be able to schedule and prioritize work.
- Able to deal with people's sensitivity tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally at all times.
- Ability to demonstrate a commitment to embodying a personal addiction-free lifestyle.
- The successful candidate will be asked to provide a current Criminal Record Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Screening and a valid driver’s license as a condition of employment.
