Job Summary

Internal Audit Services is an independent, objective, assurance function, serving the Administration and the Board of Governors. Reporting to the Director, Internal Audit Services (IAS), the Senior Internal Auditor will provide objective, quality assurance to the Board of Governors’ Finance, Audit, Investment & Risk Committee via the Director, IAS on the effectiveness of risk management, control and governance processes.

Key Responsibilities

Assist members of the university in meeting their objectives to ensure strategic objectives and goals are met; assets are safeguarded; compliance with laws, regulations, contracts and policies; and the integrity and reliability of Dalhousie’s financial, student and operational information is maintained. Advise members of the university on how to improve their risk management, control and governance processes by identifying and evaluating significant risk exposures and ensuring the risk is mitigated to a level that is acceptable to the university. Complete all phases of assurance engagements including planning and completing audits; developing customized audit procedures and solutions; meeting with managers to discuss and negotiate recommendations; and monitoring and performing follow-up action on recommendations. Support IAS in the integration of analytics across the Internal Audit methodology, including supporting the development of a data analytics program to assist in the implementation and growth of agile auditing. Support IAS in the ongoing facilitation of an agile audit plan. Assess if significant legislative or regulatory risks/issues impacting the university are recognized and addressed appropriately. Advise on how to identify and define risks/issues and help develop practical and effective solutions.

Note

The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.

Required Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant field plus at least three years of audit experience (or equivalent combination of training and experience). Have a current professional auditing designation CIA, CISA) or achieve within three (3) years from date of employment. Broad knowledge of business practices, processes, controls, risk and governance frameworks as well as of information systems and information security controls (ITGCs). Knowledge and experience with data analytics tools such as Idea Caseware, data visualization such as Tableau, and analysis of sets of data to identify anomalies and trends. Strong judgment, initiative, and analytical and problem-solving skills with the proven ability to develop creative, innovative solutions while managing concurrent projects. Excellent relationship-building, interpersonal and communication (presentation, verbal and written) skills.
