The County of Huron’s Public Works Department is seeking a Full-time Mechanic to Join the Team Position Summary:

The mechanic performs related repairs and maintenance to the County of Huron fleet of heavy-duty trucks, loaders, graders, related equipment and other vehicles. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Role and Responsibilities:
  • Diagnose trouble, plan methods and sequence of performing work when required. Keep records to
    establish the cost of parts and service records.
  • Ensure service procedures are fully compliant with corporate policies, manufacturer repair and
    maintenance manuals, and relevant Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Repair any mechanical, electrical or hydraulic problems on any of the county-owned fleet of cars, vans,
    light trucks, heavy-duty trucks, backhoes, loaders, bulldozers, graders, pumps and small engine
    equipment.
  • With the assistance of Manufacturers’ mechanics, repair and overhaul specialized engines and
    transmissions.
  • Perform government-mandated annual and semi-annual inspections and repairs to heavy-duty trucks and
    other vehicles.
  • Completion of regulated forms and safety certificates.
  • Performs general welding and fabrication of parts for equipment repair.
  • Decides on which parts are serviceable, repairable or should be replaced.
  • Sources and orders parts as needed.
  • Make pieces of equipment like quick attach brackets for tractor or signs
  • Make hydraulic hoses
  • Figure out and wire the stop signs and the crosswalk signs
  • Manufacturing brackets and consoles and wiring for all the County Fleet
  • Assumes some duties of Fleet and Facilities Manager and/or Fleet and Facilities Coordinator in his/her
    absence.
  • Inspection, maintenance, and repairs associated with seasonal change-out of attachments and specialized
    equipment.
  • Provides instruction and guidance to equipment operators on routine maintenance and minor repairs to
    their equipment
  • Maintain a clean work area and perform miscellaneous duties associated with the job.
  • Completes equipment inspection and maintenance records.
  • Need to be aware of hazards, burns, cuts, and back injury while working with compressed air (150 psi),
    working with hydraulic systems (2500 psi) and working around all equipment.
  • Responsible for the calibration of various specialized pieces of equipment and sensors.
  • May be required to work overtime if the need arises.
  • Must be capable of performing mobile/running repairs when needed and possess appropriate tools.
  • Participate in training on all pieces of equipment so that he/she knows how all equipment operates and
    understands the basics to be able to repair it properly.
  • Supports day-to-day operations as needed in the absence of Fleet and Facilities Coordinator and/or Fleet and
  • Facilities Manager.
  • Must be flexible to work days and afternoons primarily during the winter season.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively.
  • Heavy lifting, bending, stooping and awkward positions is required.
  • Requires being on-call through the winter season (evenings and weekends).
  • Work hours through summer months are 4 days per week 10 hour days (6:30 am to 5:00 pm)
  • Shift hours through winter months – 5 days per week (7:30 am to 4:00 pm Winter Shift) and (6:30 am –
    5:00 pm Monday – Thursday) summer shift. Shift hours may adjust from time – to – time.
Qualifications and Educational Requirements:
  • Must be physically capable of fulfilling the duties of the position.
  • Must have a minimum of Grade 12 education.
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years of experience as a licensed mechanic.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license Class AZ, or be willing to obtain.
  • Must have a valid Ontario Ministry of College and Universities Truck and Coach Certificate (310T).
  • Preferred to additionally have a valid Automobile Service Technician (310S) Certificate of
    Qualification;
  • Must have arc and mig welding experience including welding aluminum.
  • Must possess all hand tools applicable to the trade and be comfortable working in a team environment.
Preferred Skills:
  • Preference is given to applicants with experience in vehicle electronic test equipment procedures using
    diagnostic tools such as a laptop, pro-link tester and diagnostic scanner.
  • Knowledge of diesel engines and transmissions is a definite asset.
