What you will do:

Program Philosophy

Offer culturally sensitive services where indicated. Uphold the principles of Harm Reduction, Housing First and TMACT Fidelity Understand the Residential Tenancy Act Understand and follow program policies and procedures. 

Program Participant Care 

Connect participants to appropriate services in the community and assist in facilitating referrals as needed.Accompany and/or provide transportation support to external appointments, such as viewings.Advocate for the rights of program participants Demonstrate strong crisis support and de-escalation skills. Openness to a broad scope of practice with a commitment to innovation and flexibilityAssist clients in doing housing rental searches on the computer.Assist clients to complete rental applications.Equip clients for viewings by providing them with proper interviewing skills. Offer basic resource information to assist participants with housing, entitlements, employment, education, community integration, etc.Provide Participants with information and strategies that will help them maintain their housing and be a successful tenant.Provide support to both participants and landlords through the eviction process to maintain a positive experience and relationship.

Program Tasks

Contact and recruit potential landlordsUphold privacy law and maintain participant confidentialityAlert appropriate resources in emergency and crisis situationsParticipate in weekly Housing MeetingsContribute to special initiatives and events as requiredWork to strengthen and maintain partnership with existing landlords. 

What you bring

Within one year of completing a Bachelor's degree or diploma in a relevant field is preferred Familiarity with the Residential Tenancy Act (RTA) is an assetEstablish, develop and maintain positive relationships with community partnersExperience building leads through networkingAbility to problem solve and find solutionsExcellent negotiating and communications skillsAdministrative experience is an assetFluent in both spoken and written English Excellent computer skillsAbility to manage multiple conflicting prioritiesExperience with the management of paper and electronic files Ability to work independently and effectively with members of an interdisciplinary teamMinimum two years of experience in a social service setting or related experienceExperience working with vulnerable populations with significant mental health and substance use issuesStrong knowledge of local resources for housing, mental health, addiction, community support, finances, etc. Understanding of Housing First and Harm ReductionComfort meeting individually with participants in the community, in a broad variety of settings, with a safety-first mindsetKnowledge of evidence-based interventions (e.g., motivational interviewing, de-escalation skills, crisis intervention, etc.)Exceptional communication, organization, advocacy, teaching, and rapport-building skillsStrong initiative in times of limited supervisionClass 5 non-GDL driver's license and personal vehicle for business use, clean driver abstract, plus $2 million liability coverage are required First Aid (either Standard/Intermediate or Emergency/Basic) - Level C CPR within 30 days of hire date, certification must be valid for a minimum of 6 months upon hireA satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal record clearance is required Knowledge of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP) and the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions (TRC) 94 Calls to Action is an asset

Working Conditions:

This position requires frontline staff, in some cases, to be exposed to emotionally disturbing events, such as medical distress, threatened/actual serious injury, violence, abuse, and death. There may also be exposure to situations where clients may be experiencing fear, terror, hopelessness, rage, self-harm and conflict. It is understood and accepted that this position will be working in distress/high-stress situations, which may include emergency response where resiliency, stress tolerance, and the ability to maintain composure is imperative. This position may also be exposed to bodily fluids. The health and safety - both physical and psychological- of our employees is a priority.
