Nature of Position

The function of the Supported Child Development (SCD) Intake Consultant is to complete intakes and determine support needs, while also supporting the inclusion of children who require extra support to attend a childcare setting in the South Okanagan/Similkameen.

The SCD Intake Consultant completes intakes, determines eligibility, and level of support for referred children. The SCD Intake Consultant is the supervisor of the SCD Assistants who provide direct service to children with support needs. The SCD Intake Consultant provides case management for the families and children on their caseload.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or Early Childhood Development or an early childhood development related field (Child and Youth care, Psychology, Social Work, Education) with a minimum of three years’ experience in inclusive childcare settings or a combination of related training and experience.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

Demonstrated knowledge of family centered practice early intervention, child development, and services that support children with developmental delays and their families. Knowledge of developmentally appropriate early childhood practice and inclusion, and the ability to model and communicate these concepts to staff, childcare settings and families. Comprehensive knowledge of community childcare resources and other community support services. Knowledge of cultural and socio-economic issues, including family systems and culturally appropriate practices.

Key Responsibilities

Consultation to Families

Support the family in finding appropriate childcare and provide ongoing support in relation to their childcare. Facilitate the development and implementation of individual service plans for children on the waitlist until they are on a Consultant’s caseload, that reflect the choices and priorities identified by their families. Support and facilitate transitions for the child to other programs/services including but not limited to: Kindergarten, youth programs, adult services and other communities.

Consultation to Childcare Providers

Support the childcare setting to develop and implement inclusive philosophies, practices, policies and procedures. Provide information, resources, suggestions, strategies and training to support inclusive practices, family-centered and culturally appropriate practices in childcare settings. Work collaboratively with childcare settings to supervise staff (if applicable), and to develop and implement Individual Service Plans for children served by the SCD program.

Responsibility to Program

Complete intakes for new families to determine eligibility and level of support needed for child in the program, including the use of Support Guides and assessment tools as appropriate. Maintain the SCD program waitlist and hold a caseload of files of the children on the waitlist.

Community Partners

Work with community partners, including but not limited, to Child Care Resource and Referral, OSNS, Community Care Facilities Licensing, Infant Development Program, all Licensed and License-Not-Required childcare programs, School District and Child and Youth Committees to enhance services and resources available to children with support needs. Actively work to enhance capacity in Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities in support of access to services.

Other Requirements

Early Intervention and Prevention Training. Valid BC Driver’s License, reliable vehicle, clean driving record, and the ability to obtain business use insurance. Successful criminal record check Current First Aid
