DUTIES

The Study Abroad Manager will work closely with the Director, International Partnerships and Business Development on Study Abroad partnership maintenance and development. The Study Abroad Manager will be a key member of the partnership team and will have a focus on Study Abroad partnership opportunities and possibilities for collaboration with international partners on projects across TRU.

The Study Abroad Manager will be responsible for the Study Abroad Office and its overall operations. The Manager will be responsible for overseeing and refining guiding principles and policies as well as the day-to-day operations of the Study Abroad office. The major areas of responsibility include the oversight and management of the study abroad program and promotion of the study abroad opportunities, as well as leadership for risk management for the department, particularly in the area of study abroad and international field schools.  There will be continual liaison with international counterparts, immigration officials, members of the TRU World team and other Thompson Rivers University faculty and staff.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manages the Study Abroad office re, including establishing long and short-term objectives for study abroad that are consistent with the strategic goals of the department and the university. 
  • Be accountable to meet the outbound mobility goal set by TRU World
  • Manages the operating budget, hiring, training, evaluation, and supervision of staff.
  • Recruits, trains and mentors study abroad ambassadors, buddies and student volunteers.
  • Manages and implements the broader operational policies, procedures and protocols for initiating agreements, risk management, intercultural preparation of outbound students, partner selection criteria and funding allocations.
  • Manages the administrative processes for all outgoing and incoming students.
  • Collaborates regularly with the Transnational Education Team and the International Training Centre with a view to leverage on all partnership aligned with TRU Word’s strategic goals.
  • Liaises with partner institutions, ensuring that partner institutions adequately support the needs of outgoing exchange students.
  • Liaises with the student support team to adequately support the needs of incoming study abroad students.
  • Liaises with faculty advisors to ensure that academic advising (credit transfer) needs are being addressed for both incoming and outgoing students.
  • Provides pre-departure and re-entry support to incoming and outgoing students.  
  • Facilitates communication and liaison across the campus with respect to study abroad and promotes exchange opportunities and an overall awareness of study abroad through various avenues. 
  • Coordinates the participation of returning exchange students and faculty in study abroad promotion and presentations.
  • Facilitates, advises and assists faculty members in the development and implementation of field school opportunities.
  • Provides leadership for risk management, particularly as it relates to study abroad and field school activities.
  • Manages a resource centre for study and work opportunities abroad, a study abroad database and other electronic resources including the Study Abroad website. 
  • Works closely with academic areas to lead the development of standardized processes for field schools.  Chairs campus-wide International Mobility Committee

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • A related Bachelor’s degree is required; however, a Master’s degree would be preferred. 
  • Three (3) to five (5) years supervisory experience in international education and/or international business is required.


SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE

  • Strong supervisory, organizational, and oral/written communication skills are critical. 
  • Experience in study abroad and/or working abroad in an educational context is critical. 
  • A demonstrated understanding of internationalization issues is essential.
