Job Summary

The EEG and/or EMG technologist performs Routine and Sleep Deprived, Intensive Care and Neonatal electroencephalographic (EEG) & electromyographic (EMG) procedures with minimal supervision.

Primary Responsibilities

•Prepare patients for EEG and/or EMG examinations. Ensures patient comfort, support and safety.
•Completes brain wave conduction and/or nerve conduction examinations in accordance with departmental protocols and best practices.
•Prepares reports of brain wave and/or nerve conduction examinations for interpretation by the physician.
•Assists the physician in completion of the EEG and/or EMG assessments. Ability to recognize significant gross abnormalities, and reports them to the physician.
•Checks, calibrates and performs routine maintenance to diagnostic equipment. Care and maintenance of the digital EEG machine & accessories
•Processes, records and files EEG/EMG reports
•Completes EEG head measurements using the standardized 10-20 head system of measuring,
•Consistently applies electrodes accurately, and maintains good electrode impedances a
•Abstracts relevant information from the patient’s chart (electronic/paper copy), from the patient and/or support person. Observes and notes clinical activity occurring during the patient’s test.
•Demonstrates strong trouble-shooting skills. Calibrates equipment before each procedure, detects artifact and can perform minor repairs. Reports major problems to Manager and Biomedical department, as required.
•Responsible for stocking the EEG and/or EMG room(s) with necessary supplies, including linen and medical supplies.
•Demonstrates cost effectiveness in supply utilization
•Performs hyperventilation, photic stimulation and obtains sleep recordings, when possible
•Adapts recordings that best demonstrate specific abnormalities. Selection of appropriate Montages and Site selection for additional electrodes should be demonstrated with minimal assistance
•Continues to develop professionally by attending seminars, workshops, & educational opportunities
•Demonstrates willingness to learn new procedures, help co-workers with difficult patients.
•Consistently demonstrates strong patient care & customer service toward parents/support persons, physicians and co-workers

Qualifications

•Graduate of an accredited Electroneurodiagnostic Technology or Electromyography Technology Program, preferred
•Registered or eligibility to register with Canadian Board of Registration of Electroneurophysiology Technologists (CBRET) or Board of Registered Electromyography Technologists of Canada (BRETC), preferred
•Membership with Canadian Association of Electroneurophysiology Technologists (CAET) is an asset.
•Minimum of 2 years of experience in performing both EEG (Adults & Pediatrics) and EMG tests -
•Certification in Electroencephalography and/or Electromyography procedures, preferred.
•Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certificate.
•Current knowledge of best practices in EEG & EMG procedures.
•Understanding of neuro anatomy and physiology, electrophysiological equipment and electronic principles.
•Ability to interpret and evaluate clinical data and information.
•Ability to work independently, self-directed and can effectively lead clinical inter-professional teams.
•Well-developed ability to organize daily departmental workflow and priorities.

As a condition of employment, you are required to submit proof of COVID-19 vaccination to the Hospital’s Occupational Health and Safety department.
