Opportunity

The Associate Vice President, Advancement and Alumni Relations (AVP) advances the goals of MacEwan University (MU) in continuing to elevate the University’s profile, building and maintaining long-term relationships, strategic partnerships, fund development and revenue generation to support MU in its mission, core values and strategic direction.

The AVP is responsible for developing long-term relationships with all members of MacEwan’s community, including alumni, industry, community members, and establishing strong donor relations that align with MU’s strategic vision: Teaching Greatness: Strategic Vision 2030.

Working closely with Senior Administration, the AVP ensures the integration, oversight, and coordination of the Advancement and Alumni Relations team to support MU’s strategic advancement with reputation-building, relationship development and fundraising objectives.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

The AVP plays a pivotal role in shaping, strengthening, and advancing MU's external relationships, leveraging partnerships, and elevating fundraising efforts. Primarily focused on building and nourishing long-term partnerships with donors, alumni, and the broader community, the AVP develops and implements strategies to secure philanthropic support and seeks future opportunities. This involves coordinating with various departments to identify funding priorities, organizing events, and leveraging alumni networks to foster a culture of giving. The AVP ensures MU's financial sustainability and growth through these activities, contributing significantly to its long-term success and impact. Key areas of responsibilities and focus include:

Development

Heightening MU’s visibility by identifying and increasing major gift fundraising to achieve fundraising goals. This can be achieved through the continuous development of prospect pipelines, cultivation strategies, proposal plans, and solicitation strategies. Actively managing a personal, diverse portfolio of major gift prospects and donors with continuous review and monitoring. Facilitating the progress and success of multiple modular fundraising campaigns and committing to actively developing new and exciting modular campaigns. Ensuring the effective coordination of major gift fundraising activities across MU.

Alumni Relations

Provide strategic leadership that will contribute to increased engagement with nearly 90,000 MacEwan University alumni. Oversee programming that will celebrate their achievements and strengthen their connection with the University - as volunteers, returning students, employees, advocates, donors and mentors. This includes championing programming that will build and strengthen longstanding and positive relationships with our greatest legacy - our graduates. Fosters a spirit of community, cooperation, and pride among alumni through the value-add benefits, opportunities for involvement, career development, and communications designed to connect and build affinity between alumni and their alma mater.

Donor Relations

Strategic development and implementation of annual giving fundraising campaigns. This includes the establishment of annual donor touch points, donor segmentation models, new campaign funds and appeals, communication strategies, and direct mail programs Strategic management and enhancement of the Stewardship Program. Building and maintaining all campaign reports and dashboards and developing new data processes and performance metrics as the campaign evolves. Oversee department prospect research.

This leader plays a critical role in furthering the university’s profile on the regional, provincial, national, and international stage. The successful candidate will possess a combination of the following highly desired experience components and demonstrated skills and abilities:

Demonstrated experience and a solid track record of success in generating revenues, ideally through various advancement initiatives. A strategic thinker with a background and demonstrated accomplishments in brand management and reputation awareness. A coach that cares about people and their wellness. One that creates positive, high performing environments with strong, cohesive team of professionals focused on common goals and objectives. A team player with excellent interpersonal skills, high energy, entrepreneurial thinking, optimism, and enthusiasm for MU. A sophisticated understanding of the role of MU and its responsibility to the community. A solid understanding of the post-secondary sector and the Alberta fundraising landscape would be desirable.

Qualifications & Education Requirements

The AVP, Advancement and Alumni Relations will have attained a Master’s degree, in a related field, have extensive experience in advancement programs in post-secondary leadership, possess broad and substantive senior leadership experience in one or multiple disciplines in development, alumni relations, and donor relations. The AVP will have familiarity with higher education governance, and a proven track record of successfully delivering complex initiatives and hosting revenue generating events.

Senior to executive level experience in post-secondary environment directing and supporting staff, including fundraising professionals. Demonstrated experience and success in major giving and planned giving. Experience and effective use of a relational donor database. Experience in multi-year strategic planning, financial budgeting, budget implementation and revenue forecasting. Results driven with demonstrated experience in leading management and professional team through transformational change. Exceptional relationship builder with strong verbal/written communication and presentation skills.
