Our Niagara region client has designed a brand new position supporting 4 divisions in North America. Reporting to the CFO based in the US, the Controller is an exciting opportunity to apply your strong financial reporting, treasury management and corporate tax compliance skills and knowledge to a newly created position. This role is hybrid and requires a minimum of 2 days a week at our client's St Catharines office.
As the Controller, you will play a pivotal role in establishing and managing a new standard of financial excellence to support our operations in the USA and Canada. Reporting directly to the CFO, you will be responsible for overseeing treasury management, tax compliance, commercial insurances and certain consolidated reports for both countries, ensuring regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and strategic alignment with each company objectives. The Controller develops and implements treasury policies and procedures, manages cash flow and banking relationships and oversees banking transactions and foreign exchange issues. As the Controller, you will ensure compliance with US and Canadian tax authorities and work closely with external tax advisors to ensure tax returns in both countries are filed accurately on a timely basis. The Controller manages insurance policies for all companies and ensures adequate coverage. Finally, the Controller prepares consolidated financial statements for the group.
To be considered for the role of Controller, you must be a CPA with minimum 5 years of relevant work experience. You must have hands-on treasury management, corporate tax and financial reporting experience. You must have a proven track record of working in company with diverse cultures across the globe. You should be a strong relationship builder who can work closely with the external auditors, tax advisors, insurance companies and banks. Finally, you must be a polished professional with exceptional verbal and written communication skills. You will be commuting with outside advisors and internal employees from entry level to the highest level of the executive leadership team. Designated CPA's at the manager level and above in mid to large public accounting firms are invited to apply.
- Develop and implement treasury policies and procedures for cash management, liquidity forecasting, and risk mitigation in close relationship with the Group Treasurer at Head Office.
- Manage banking systems performance and relationships, optimize cash balances in USD, CAD and Euro, monitor investments and loans performance, monitor daily cash transaction and lead transactional issue resolution with banks. Manage credit cards programs.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state/provincial, and local tax regulations for our all our operations in the USA and Canada, including income tax, sales tax, and other applicable taxes.
- Coordinate with external tax advisors and authorities to file accurate and timely tax returns and instalments. Support the resolution of any tax-related issues our entities may face.
- Coordinate with external tax advisors the annual current and deferred tax expense. Ensure auditors get proper documentation and revolve any tax-related issues related to the audit.
- Evaluate insurance needs and procure commercial insurance policies to protect against operational risks in Canada and USA in close relationship with operations, the two brokers and the Group Treasurer at Head Office.
- Coordinate with insurance brokers and underwriters to negotiate terms, coverage, and premiums.
- Ensure all insurance operating requirements are fulfilled and lead the insurance claim process.
- Prepare internal audited consolidated financial statements for Canada and USA operations, ensuring accuracy and compliance with Canadian and/or US GAAP.
- Establish standardized processes and controls for treasury management, insurance administration, taxation and consolidated financial reporting across all operating entities.
- Implement best practices, leverage AI technology solutions, and train team members to ensure operational excellence.
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field with CPA certification or Master in Business Administration.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in leading position related to treasury management, tax compliance, commercial insurance, and financial reporting, preferably in a multinational environment.
- Strong knowledge of financial and tax principles, regulations and standards (Canada/USA).
- Proficiency in financial reporting tools and experience with ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle or Hyperion).
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate cross-functionally and with remote teams and drive change in a dynamic environment.
