Durham College is seeking an experienced and motivated professional who shares our commitment to quality and student success. Professional and Part-Time Learning (PPL) requires a part-time facilitator to teach a section of a course entitled “ Addictions & Mental Health: Theory and Practice (SSW 4580 )”. This course will be delivered online .

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Addictions & Mental Health: Theory and Practice (SSW 4580) is a course in the Social Service Workers Diploma Program. Addictions and Mental Health: Theory and Practice is an advanced course that builds upon the knowledge and skills developed in several prerequisite courses. Students will be introduced to the different models of addiction, current perspectives on mental health, the different treatment methodologies derived from those models and perspectives as well as current “best practices” used with clients who present with addiction and mental health-related issues. The student will learn and demonstrate the ability to apply case management principles, including the components of comprehensive clinical assessment, treatment matching, treatment planning and the use of relapse prevention strategies. The course is intended to not only assist the student in developing skills to effectively work with individuals with addiction and mental health-related issues but also to hone their generic counselling skills and practices.

The responsibilities of Durham College Part-Time Facilitators include, but are not limited to:

1.Creating a positive learning environment that accommodates students’ diverse cultural and educational backgrounds, experiences and individual learning styles;

2.Utilizing principles of adult education to actively engage students in the learning process;

3.Effectively using educational technologies to support learning as well as managing and posting grades;

4.Develop curriculum that uses appropriate strategies and tools to assess student learning;

5.Ensuring that all course content is current and relevant;

6.Working independently and demonstrating initiative; and

7.Working effectively with students, the program team and a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will meet or exceed the following qualifications:

1.Minimum of five years of recent experience that relates directly to the topic being taught;

2.Holds a Master’s degree in Social Work, Education or a related field;

3.Holds current registration with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers or is actively working in this capacity.

4.Teaching experience at the post-secondary level, with the demonstrated application of adult educational principles and teaching/assessment methodologies;

5.Excellent verbal and written communication skills, critical thinking and problem-solving and organizational and time management skills;

6.Experienced in the use of online technologies.

7.Self-motivated and independent worker with a track record in meeting deadlines.
