The and its invites applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) position from outstanding Indigenous — First Nations, Inuit, and Métis — scholars with strong profiles in Educational Research. We encourage applications from qualified candidates who can contribute to the educational research that intersects with areas such as, but not limited to: policy studies, health profession education, counselling psychology, social studies, self-determination, human rights, territoriality and (re)mapping, child services, food sovereignty, histories, citizenship, curriculum studies, cultural studies, Indigenous futurities, treaty education, land-based pedagogies, community-led, oral history, arts-based research methodologies, etc., spirituality, languages, educational governance, ethical relationality, feminist, two-spirited, queer and/or transgender studies, disability studies, Teacher Education, pedagogy, science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM), Indigenous excellence and/or related fields.

The Faculty of Education is located on the unceded ancestral territories of the Algonquin people in the heart of the nation's capital. With more than sixty professors, we offer an exceptional intellectual environment to students, educational researchers, and professors. This recruitment also reflects the Faculty of Education's 2025 strategic plan, which focuses on innovation; educational technologies; a vibrant Francophonie; Indigenous rights; antiracism, equity and social justice. We invite First Nations, Inuit, and Métis candidates who are committed to strengthening the Faculty of Education’s existing interdisciplinary relations with other faculties (e.g., Social Sciences, Arts, Science, Medicine, Health Science), with the Institute of , school boards, and community organizations who seek to enhance the research and educational opportunities specifically for Indigenous communities, their families, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, youth, and children here in Canada and the world.

Tier 2 Chairs , tenable for five years and renewable once, are for exceptional emerging researchers , acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead in their field. For each Tier 2 Chair, the institution receives $100,000 annually for five years, with an additional $20,000 annual research stipend for first-term Tier 2 Chairs.

Candidates should, at a minimum, be assistant or associate professors, or possess the necessary qualifications to be appointed to these levels. Candidates who are more than 10 years from their highest degree must contact the University of Ottawa directly for questions related to their potential eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair. The institution may nominate a professor or a researcher who is more than 10 years from their highest degree at the time of nomination and has experienced legitimate career interruptions (). In such cases, the institution must submit to the Secretariat a formal justification (using the ), explaining why the nominee is still considered to be an emerging scholar. The University recognizes the legitimate impact that leaves (e.g., parental leave, leave due to illness) can have on a candidate’s record of research achievement and that these leaves will be taken into careful consideration during the assessment process. New CRC nominees are also eligible for infrastructure support from the (CFI) to help acquire state-of-the-art equipment essential to their work. 

Selective hiring

The objective of this measure is to increase the representation of the four designated groups in the allocation of Canada Research Chair positions. Internal candidates are not eligible.

Skills requirements:

Education: Ph.D. in Education or equivalent in a field related to the position.

Work Experience and required qualifications:

A demonstrated excellent track record of research in educational research in collaboration with Indigenous communities in Canada;

A demonstrated ability to teach at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels in a context of interdisciplinary collaboration;

Ability to teach hybrid and on-line courses;

Excellent communication skills in English. Passive knowledge of the other official language in Canada (French) is a requirement for tenure. Proficiency in an Indigenous language is considered an asset for this position as well as English-French bilingualism;

Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate research excellence in the CRC’s identified area(s); have the potential to achieve international recognition in their field; a solid record in supervision and potential to attract, develop and retain excellent trainees, students and future researchers; the ability to obtain external research funds from multiple sources of funding; teaching praxes reflect an existing and ongoing relationship to legally recognized and inherent Indigenous nations, communities and/or organizations (non-profit, health and wellness, educational sectors, etc.), or artistic and heritage organizations (museums, galleries, theatre, etc.).

Rank and salary: Regular tenure-track academic appointment at the Faculty of Education. Salary scale for an Assistant Professor starts at 94,588$ (as of May 1, 2023). Salaries are competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
