Work Arrangement

Hybrid: - Position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time but the general expectation is that the employee be onsite three (3) days a week to the Markham or Oshawa offices of General Motors of Canada Company. The Software Safety Engineering Group Leader (EGL) position is a people leadership position within the Automated Driving and Active Safety Software Organization that will be responsible for leading the oversight and guidance to develop safe software solutions for vehicles today and tomorrow.

Responsibilities

Lead a team of Safety Design Software Architects in safety strategy discussions, interfacing with GM teams globally.

Collaborate with Software and System Safety teams to develop and maintain software safety strategy, requirements, and execution.

Develop, allocate, and verify software safety requirements to ensure completeness, consistency, and alignment to system-level safety requirements.

Support the design and implementation of safety monitor algorithms depending on specific program needs to ensure proper coverage and integrity.

Ensure adherence to GM safety and software development processes.

Conduct and participate in software hazard analysis and risk assessments, both at the software architecture/design and implementation levels.

Escalate and champion any unresolved safety-related issues and confirm that the resolution process has been followed.

Coach the software teams by providing safety process knowledge.

Lead or contribute to initiatives towards the continuous improvement of the safety and software development processes.

Interface with corporate and industry experts to stay current in safety processes, methods, and tools.

Conduct regular staff meetings, one-on-one sessions with ongoing feedback, and manage team/employee performance.

Hire, mentor, coach, and develop employees and their careers.

Establish and monitor budget for responsible activities.

Execute resource planning for required activities.

Model and foster GM's Core Values and Winning Behaviors.

Required Skills and Experience

10+ years of embedded systems development experience in safety-critical domains (automotive, aerospace, medical, nuclear).

3+ years leading systems and/or software development teams.

Demonstrated performance in a position requiring excellent understanding of embedded software implementation details as well as the larger systems picture.

Strong knowledge and experience with ISO 26262 or other functional safety standards such as IEC 61508, IEC 62304, or DO-178C.

Deep understanding and experience performing or evaluating safety analysis methods such as HAZOP, FMEA, FTA, and STPA.

Experience reviewing and/or developing software requirements from system-level requirements.

Experience with automotive, active safety, and automated driving systems.

Full software development lifecycle experience (software requirements, design, coding, verification).

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Ability to work independently and in a team environment, interfacing with GM engineers globally.

Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.

Experience with employee mentorship, development, and coaching.

Good interpersonal communication and negotiation skills.

Willingness to travel occasionally.

Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Safety, or Software

Preferred Skills and Experience

Advanced degree(s) in Safety and/or Software or equivalent experience.

Experience in C/C++ embedded programming and MATLAB Simulink.

Knowledge of different software architecture and design patterns.

Multi-core programming and real-time operating system experience.

Prior experience with employee appraisal, performance remediation, hiring and other administrative functions.

Knowledge of in-vehicle communication networks (CAN, FlexRay, LIN, Ethernet).
