As a Registered Nurse/Registered Psych Nurse in the Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES), you will provide holistic assessments within a recovery model framework for patients in psychiatric or psychosocial crisis presenting to the Emergency Department (ED). You will work as part of an interdisciplinary team in the ED to assess the patient, determine the level of illness & risk to self or others, & make recommendations to Emergency Physicians & Psychiatrists regarding the plan of care for the patient. You will collaborate with services & organize referrals to community services or admission to inpatient units based on client need. You will assess & develop an effective plan using the AMH continuum to identify appropriate services for clients & arrange care. You will provide brief interventions to clients & will identify; initiate, & modify interventions based on changing needs of patients as appropriate to the RN/RPN legislated scope of practice. As a PES Nurse, you will act as a resource to ED staff regarding assessment & care of patients with mental health conditions. You will provide an enhanced model of care to Mental Health patients in the ED. The population includes adolescents, families, & adults.

Description:

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit Holders shall be paid $ - $ Upon being entered into the register of Registered Nurses, the rate of pay shall be adjusted to the rate of pay applicable to a Registered Nurse in accordance with AHS/UNA Article or (ii) as applicable. Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, completion of the following free courses is required: CRNA Medication Management - Chapters 1 - 4 ( and the NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification (

Additional Required Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:

Nursing experience in an acute care setting is preferred. Knowledge of the Addiction and Mental Health related resources across the Calgary Zone preferred. Knowledge of verbal de-escalation techniques preferred. Knowledge of how to intervene is an asset. Knowledge of the Mental Health Act preferred. Experience in various risk assessment Suicide risk, Homicidal risk, violent risk an asset. Certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) preferred.
