How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team:

The Teacher, The Nature School is responsible for the development, administration and delivery of education programs with The Nature School at The Toronto Zoo and occasionally other TRCA facilities or locations.

Major Responsibilities:

Develops and delivers forest school programming with the registered private school, The Nature School, at the Toronto Zoo and occasionally other TRCA facilities. Monitors, assesses, and documents student achievement and prepares individual student report cards on student learning, performance and achievement using the Ontario Curriculum as a guideline. Administration of parent and student communication, registration forms, tracking, and data collection and reporting in compliance with legislative requirements of the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health and other associated Ministries as required. Providing duty of care for children of primary age (senior Kindergarten to grade 3). Mentors and assists staff and teacher candidate training, including co-op students and seasonal staff. Develops risk management plans identifying hazards and actions for mitigation. Works collaboratively on partnership development, stakeholder and relationship management and works with partners on a regular basis.

What will you need to succeed:

Education (degree/diploma/certifications/licenses)

Demonstrated knowledge of Forest School pedagogy and approaches to learning University degree in Education, Biology, Environmental Studies, Outdoor Recreation or a related field Ontario Certified Teacher and member in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers Valid Standard First Aid & CPR/AED Level C Certification Valid Ontario Class G2 driver's license Successful completion of a Vulnerable Sector Screening.

Experience

4+ years of teaching experience within a school, camp, nature school or outdoor education centre capacity

Knowledge/Skill/Ability – Competencies

Demonstrated knowledge of Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum expectations Strong environmental knowledge and demonstrated ability to teach environmental education concepts and principles in engaging ways to a variety of audiences and learner types. Excellent written and verbal communication skills to communicate project status for various audiences. Able to self-manage workload and prioritize tasks as an ongoing challenge in a frequently fluctuating workload and multiple deadlines.
