Clinical Nurse Leader, Neonatal Program

Using a systems thinking approach the Clinical Nurse Leader coordinates staffing coverage and provides clinical supervision, guidance and support to the nursing and support staff within the Neonatal Program, consistent with established policies, standards of practice, and philosophy at BC Women’s Hospital.


What you’ll do

Coordinate and supervise the work of nurses and support staff utilizing a priority setting and problem solving approach through methods such as making and adjusting patient assignments, scheduling and coordinating the use of staff, evaluating the work of others and providing written and/or verbal feedback to the Program Manager or designate. Coordinate the clinical functioning of the area utilizing a critical thinking approach through methods such as communicating and planning methods of monitoring patient care needs, and identifying and reporting staffing, equipment and administrative requirements on a day-to-day basis with the Program Manager and leadership team.  Improve performance and assure maximum utilization of staff through role modeling, mentoring, coaching, teaching and ongoing development of personal and professional skills to meet the needs of the patients, families and staff. Assist the Program Manager and nursing leadership team in determining and meeting the educational needs of individual staff members and groups of staff members by providing input on their competencies. Provide verbal and written input to the Neonatal Program Management team into the development, implementation and evaluation of patient care standards and policies and procedures. Participate in both program specific and hospital wide working groups and committees in support of communication processes internal and external to the Neonatal Program through participation.

What you bring

Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as an RN with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). Three (3) years recent experience in Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care and related experience in a supervisory/leadership capacity, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification.

Demonstrated ability to initiate, facilitate, and manage change. Demonstrated ability to act as a professional role model. Awareness of and commitment to learning and understanding the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight Report (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), and Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls calls for justice, and how they intersect across the health care system. Supports team members on their learning journey, ensuring education strategy for team/department to implement Indigenous Cultural Safety at a practical level. Works collaboratively with appropriate Indigenous teams/departments to ensure ICS lens applied holistically. Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019). Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).
