Overview

The Direct Machine Learning (ML) Platform Team in the Core Operating System (OS) organization places Microsoft's best innovations in machine learning and AI in the hiring manager’s team overview) hands of millions of Windows developers worldwide. The Direct Machine Learning Team is responsible for driving platform innovations for machine learning across Graphic Processing Unit, Central Processing Unit, and Neural Processing Unit (NPU) on various hardware architectures at the scale of the Windows ecosystem. Our platform, built on the DirectML core operating system stack is at the heart of the Windows Copilot Runtime. It helps power countless machine learning workloads from computer visions, audio and video to the latest generative AI models.

Our mission is to realize the Windows Copilot+ PC vision and make Windows an Artififcal Intelligence (AI) -first PC for developers by delivering breakthrough technology that will help drive Microsoft's leadership in AI for years to come. We are a learn-it-all team with passion and specialty in designing high-performance systems and tools that leverage cutting-edge hardware capabilities from optimized Graphic Procesing Unit (GPU) compute kernels to dedicated AI processor architectures on the NPU and optimized instructions on the Central Processing Unit (CPU.) We are looking for a "Princpal Software Engineer" with a desire to learn and be immersed in this fundamental platform shift that AI brings by helping the team to build highly efficient execution engines and tools in a fast-moving but highly collaborative environment. This important role offers a significant potential to positively impact Microsoft and the future of the tech industry.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications: 

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or PythonOR equivalent experience. 6+ years of experience working at low levels of software stack, device driver development, and/or integration of hardware and software.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications: 

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or PythonOR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or PythonOR equivalent experience. 4+ years people management experience. Deep knowledge with hands-on experience in ML compiler, tool, and platform technology. 10+ years of experience delivering world-class system software.  In-depth experience and knowledge in operating system development in either user-mode or kernel-mode development. A proven track record of significant technical leadership in research and development of AI platforms or frameworks technology. Prior experience in the design and development of ML hardware microarchitecture in real-world products. Proficient communication/customer interfacing skills and the ability to deal with ambiguity and prioritize issues.

Software Engineering M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across Canada is CAD $135,800 - CAD $253,000 per year.

Responsibilities

Drive co-engineering efforts with industry partners to deliver durable, scalable, and high-performance designs and platform solutions. Collaborate with engineers from within or outside the team, within or outside of Microsoft, to build and maintain existing and future features of the DirectML platform on various hardware architectures. Develop and maintain highly reliable and scalable conformance and performance benchmark systems that run across diverse hardware architectures. Model a great example of engineering excellence and product quality in all aspects of software development and partner collaboration. Help Microsoft seek out and attract new talents in AI platform research and development. Mentor and develop new engineers to take on new initiatives and challenges. Work with open-source developers and communities to maintain and advance DirectML and Microsoft platform leadership in AI technology and tooling.
