Position Summary :

A study of the scholarly literature in the analysis and interpretation of popular music (broadly conceived) and related issues. Students will develop analytical skills, and the course will culminate in the presentation of an original analysis.

This course is an advanced-level elective course for students who have completed MU242 (Structure in Pop Music) or MU266 (Theory III). The focus of the course is to deepen students’ ability to analyze an array of popular music styles from perspectives of pitch, form, harmony, texture, timbre, and rhythm in addition to other ways of analyzing popular music. The course may include popular genres as diverse as rock n’ roll, folk, rock, soul, funk, hip hop, electronic music, syncretic music, and/or other prominent pop styles. Candidates with expertise in African-American popular music are particularly welcome. The course may include a focus on application. Students taking this course will have varying backgrounds in theory (some will have Western Art Music theory, and others with popular music theory). The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate how they will work with this diverse set of students to challenge them, while meeting them at their areas of expertise. Applicants should submit a teaching dossier that describes their pedagogical approach to popular music analysis, any course innovations in curriculum, design and/or assessments, and other relevant teaching documents.

Qualifications – Required: Doctorate in Music Theory or Music Composition.

Qualifications – Discipline: A demonstrated expertise in Popular Music.

Qualifications – Preferred: Preference to candidates with publications or presentations in popular music analysis.

Qualifications - Asset: Record of scholarship in Popular Music.
