Position Summary

The Curatorial Assistant (internally known as Assistant) is a member of the Stampede Collection & Archives Team. They will support collections focused programming in Sam Centre, cataloguing artifacts, and support historical programming during Stampede.

This is a Seasonal role for 16 weeks.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

Collaborating and communicating with the Sam Centre curatorial and collections team to identify artifacts from the Calgary Stampede collection for display and educational programming in Sam Centre. Researching and writing the historical provenance of artifacts. Cataloguing artifacts into the Stampede’s collections management software. Processing and preparing artifacts for transfer from the Stampede Collection & Archives to Sam Centre utilizing proper care, handling and storage techniques. Supporting volunteers from the Calgary Stampede Historical committee as they engage in strategic program development for Sam Centre, including historical displays introduced at Stampede Answering archival research requests from the community. Other duties as required.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be proactive, optimistic, can deliver on multiple priorities and will hold the following qualifications:

Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy. Experience with research and analysis. Strong organizational and time management skills. Intermediate computer skills in MS Word, Excel, Outlook; experience with collections management databases is an asset. Able to work independently. A college diploma or university degree in history, archival or records management, museum studies, anthropology, archaeology or library science would be an asset. Training or experience in care and handling of artifacts an asset.

This position is partially funded by the Government of Canada under the  Canada Summer Jobs  program. To qualify, participants must be:

(a) between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
(b) a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the
Immigration and Refugee Protection Act*; and
(c) legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.
*International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.
