Description

Senior Instrumentation Specialists specify Instrumentation for a wide variety of applications, create datasheets and instrument indexes, request quotes, generate bill of materials (BOM) and managing instruments which are used to monitor and control engineering systems, machinery and processes. He/she specializes in solving problems using a combination of their experience with control systems, Control valve / PSV sizing, measurement instrumentation, industry regulations and standards.

Duties and Responsibilities

Assist with Instrument engineering and design for industrial plants and processes; Independently analyze complex problems by communicating with leaders, employees, and customers; Assists peers, engineers and others with instrumentation questions; Has an understanding of PLCs, HMIs, RTUs, and DCS/SCADA systems and their use in the oil and gas industry; Assists with system architecture design; Read and understand process runs and apply to the specification of instruments; Review/Modify Electrical Schematics, P&IDs, Cause and Effects, and Shutdown Keys; Prepares and maintains instrument lists and data sheets; Uses data sheets and associated information to specify, size and select instruments; Read and apply specifications, Installation Detail drawings, and electrical drawings to the specification of instrumentation; Performs bid/evaluate/award process including development of Request for Quotation (RFQ) packages, bid evaluations, and Bill of Material (BOM) entry into Enterprise Resource Planning software; Reviews and approves vendor drawings and documents; Provide technical support to Instrumentation peers, Engineers, Drafters, and others; Ensure designs and installations comply with client specifications and government standards and codes; Resolve instrument, control, and electrical technical issues; View instruments and installations in the yard or shop/field and advise on proper installation; Provide input to FAT/SAT on control systems and oil and gas equipment. (Loop/HMI/Logic checks); Assist instrument and control personnel during fabrication, construction and commissioning; Provides ongoing technical support to clients; Assists Instrumentation Supervisor in refining standards; Apply practical knowledge and develop broad based skills while contributing to the overall success of Propak’s operations through interaction with a cross functional team;

Prerequisites

Education

A recognized degree in Electrical/Mechanical/Chemical Engineering or equivalent Eng designation Registered and in good standing with Alberta Professional Engineers, Geologists, and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGA)

Experience

10+ years of directly related experience in the field of instrumentation The following experience is required: Control systems Measurement instrumentation and industry regulations P&ID’s, Cause and Effect, and Shutdown Keys Reviewing and modifying electrical schematics Calibrating and testing instrumentation is an asset Previous experience in a fabrication environment is an asset Experience with an EPCM company is an asset Design, installation, and operation of gas processing equipment including natural gas compression, refrigeration, turbo-expander, or amine treating plants is an asset Proficiency in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD Drawing Viewer, and Adobe Acrobat Reader is an asset Experience with Rockwell or DeltaV is an asset

Work Environment

Specific Work Conditions

Work involves shop and field placements, often with little notice Occasionally required to work in an office setting with usual weekday office hours Overtime may be required to meet project deadlines Requires the ability to deal with a diversity of people when responding to interdepartmental inquiries Coping with frequent interruption and changing priorities Required to attend meetings at other buildings

Physical Requirements

Requires ability to sit at a workstation for extended periods using a computer, reading manuals, etc… Occasional ability to lift, carry, and put away file boxes weighing up to 25 lbs Occasional ability to stand for extended periods for faxing, scanning, and photocopying Manual dexterity for data input, paperwork and use of standard office equipment Climbing, kneeling, crouching, and crawling when examining equipment Must wear company-standard PPE when entering fabrication shops, yards, and project sites. Project site PPE includes CSA approved steel toed boots and long pants Walking on uneven ground is to be expected in yards and at project sites
