Job Summary:

The Clinical Extern will be working as an unregulated health care provider. Clinical Externs work in collaboration with a unit healthcare team under direct and/or indirect supervision of an appointed registered healthcare professional. Externs will be hired on contract, during which the Extern will work part time hours to a maximum of full-time hours. The scheduling of these hours will be determined based on unit needs and may include day/evening/night and weekend shifts.

Responsibilities:

  • Practices under the direct and/or indirect supervision of the registered healthcare professional assigned to them and in a manner consistent with organizational policies and professional standards
  • Works with the registered healthcare professional assigned to them to ensure that they have the knowledge, skills and judgment needed to perform all actions/duties
  • Observes patient assessments and participates as requested
  • Provides assistance with lifting, turning, transferring, transporting, and ambulating as per the hospital policy
  • Assists with activities of daily living as requested and assigned
  • Assists with portering and directing patients
  • Assists with patient recreation activities - including reading, having conversations, assisting with technology and family communications, etc.
  • Assists with observing patients and reporting changes to the registered healthcare professional assigned to them
  • Assists with rounding and responding to call bells and patient requests
  • Assists with comfort measures and patient safety by ensuring the environment is clean and tidy and free of hazards
  • Document all care provided to patients per the hospital's policies
  • Assists with obtaining supplies and stocking supplies on the units
  • Requests assistance with assigned duties whenever in need
  • Demonstrates excellent problem-solving, decision making and critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrates excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Demonstrates empathetic and appropriate verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrates strong written communication and documentation skills
  • Participates as a team member
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Students enrolled in any of the following programs are eligible to apply:
    • Nursing students in any year of study in a College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) approved Baccalaureate Nursing (BScN or BN) program and/or Practical Nursing (PN) program.
    • Occupational therapy Master's degree students in any year of study in a training program accredited by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT)
    • Physiotherapy Master's degree students in any year of study of a training program accredited by Physiotherapy Education Accreditation Canada (PEAC).
    • Respiratory Therapy students in their 2nd or final year of a training program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Respiratory Therapy Education, which is administered by the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists.
    • Undergraduate medical students in their final year of a program of medical education leading to the MD degree that has been accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS).
    • Internationally educated nurses who have initiated registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), have received a CNO letter of direction and meet one of the following: ? are in any year of study in a CNO approved program, such as a BScN-IEN program, PN-IEN program, or ? are completing a micro-credential plan with a curriculum to meet the CNO requirements for registration (e.g., Standards of Practice for nursing, Entry-to Practice Competencies, Evidence of Safe Practice, Evidence of English Language Proficiency) or ? have completed their educational requirements (e.g., BScN-IEN/PN-IEN program or micro-credentialing) and are waiting to write their registration exam

  • Minimum one (1) year of previous employment in any setting with suitable references
  • Strong computer skills specifically in Microsoft Office, Outlook and Internet.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and customer service orientation.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work in a fast paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain privacy and confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated initiative and self-direction with the ability to work with supervision and take direction when necessary.
  • Demonstrated commitment to own professional development and continuing education.
  • Collaborates with other team members.
  • Knowledgeable of the roles of other team members and recognizes and respects their contributions.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain dignity and self-esteem of patients and families in delivery of care
  • Demonstrated ability to practice behaviors consistent with the mission, vision, and values of the hospital and in keeping with the hospital's Code of Conduct

Other pertinent conditions:

  • We are interested in hearing from students who are interested in ongoing temporary part time employment throughout their school year and while attending school.
  • Must be available and willing to work all shifts as required, which may include; weekends, stat holidays, day, evening and overnight shifts.
