We are looking for a Clinical Nurse Specialist, having a specialty-based focus in General Internal Medicine (GIM) and Cardiology, functions in an expanded nursing role demonstrating a high level of autonomy and expert skill to formulate clinical decisions and appropriately manage patients. You will be part of the nursing leadership team within the Department of Medicine, providing leadership in knowledge based practice, the development of standards and quality initiatives enhancing safe high quality patient and family centred care. The role will also support program development and nursing professional practice. 

The Clinical Nurse Specialist, having a specialty-based focus in General Internal Medicine (GIM) and Cardiology, functions in an expanded nursing role demonstrating a high level of autonomy and expert skill to formulate clinical decisions and appropriately manage patients. You will be part of the nursing leadership team within the Department of Medicine, providing leadership in knowledge based practice, the development of standards and quality initiatives enhancing safe high quality patient and family centred care. The role will also support program development and nursing professional practice.

This is a temporary full-time position for approximately - months.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Develops and maintains standards of nursing practice and management of patient care through the creation of an environment conducive to growth, the development of staff and excellence in nursing practice. Supports and fosters the philosophy, goals and standards of the Department of Nursing Collaborates with the clinical leadership team in setting the direction for quality nursing practice and effective management of patient care. Leads quality activities and administrative duties including committee involvement. Supports and collaborates with multi-disciplinary team members to promote and strengthen the team approach to care. Supports the nursing care of patients with complex medical needs, including skin and wound care. Participates in policy and procedure development.  Participates in research activities and initiating and implementing evidence based practice to support practices. Delivers, coordinates and participates in education and professional development activities/programs; performing activities to further develop and strengthen the profession of nursing. Mentors and develops nursing staff in practice and leadership activities.  Provides direct clinical support and evaluation of nursing practice and performance. Promotes and supports the maintenance of a safe patient care and work environment from a practice perspective; includes engaging in safety audits, promoting staff accountability in workplace safety, and ensuring that adequate structures and processes are in place such as staffing, equipment, supplies, physical space, policies and procedures Collaborates with the leadership team in creating a positive work environment at the unit level. Performs other duties consistent with the job classification, as required. Job Requirements Completion of a Master's Degree Program in Nursing required (Bachelor's Degree in Nursing with a Master's Degree in a related discipline may be considered). Five (5) years recent related experience in acute medicine or cardiology Applicants with proven equivalent recent and related training and experience may be considered Eligible for cross-appointment to an academic institution. Current certificate of registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario. Membership in RNAO – other organizations relevant to role. Medical and/or cardiology certification from Canadian Nurses Association (preferred). Effective verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal and customer services skills. Excellent organization and time management skills. Excellent decision making, problem recognition, problem solving skills, negotiation and conflict resolution skills. Demonstrated commitment to collaborative practice. Ability to utilize information technology. Expertise in program development and coordination, research utilization, adult education and professional development. Experience in program management and evaluation; as well as performance and process improvement. Ability to foster sound working relationships with clients/patients, families, interdisciplinary team members, and internal and community referral sources. Strong facilitation, relationship management and change management skills. Ability to work confidently under pressure and tight timelines and demonstrate the flexibility and adaptability to handle a variety of challenges on short notice. Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance record.
