Summary

The Environmental Services Technician conducts data mapping activities for the Metlakatla Stewardship Society. you will assume the roles and responsibilities as an integral part of the cultural and resource management strategies and initiatives in addition to providing support services relating to other departments.

 

Responsibilities

The Environmental Services Technician shall conduct technical and research activities, including but not limited to:

  • Produce map products (digital and hardcopy) for distribution, including ARC Viewer.
  • Data entry, maintenance and management.
  • Provide technical support to departments regarding day-to-day requests for GIS information.
  • Create and maintain map inventory for each department, and maintain a catalogue of this inventory for users to access.
  • Design and development of GIS-based mapping products for analysis, education, and display.
  • Acquire and maintain GIS and research data from a variety of internal and external sources.
  • Provide written and oral progress reports to the Manager weekly, or as requested.
  • Conduct research and maintain research information if requested; recommend research activities based on own GIS knowledge and experience, and follow up when recommendations are approved.
  • Acquire, coordinate and manage software and software licences.
  • Recommend and develop GIS research strategies.
  • Acquire and maintain hardware and peripherals.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Required Knowledge and Skills: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Geography with an emphasis on Geography Information Systems (GIS), 
  • At least 1 year of GIS experience.
  •  Ability to read legal descriptions, deeds, plat books, maps, and software procedures manuals.
  •  Skill in interpreting land descriptions, maps, drawings, charts, plans, survey records, and aerial photos.
  •  Knowledge of principles and practices of file and records management (data collection, entry and maintenance).
  •  Skill in reading, understanding, interpreting and applying relevant land rules, ordinances, codes and regulations.
  •  Skill in following and effectively communicating verbal and written instructions.
  •  Skill in working within deadlines to complete projects and assignments.
  • Ability to communicate orally with customers, clients, and the public in face-to-face one-on-one settings or using a telephone.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in MS Windows-based computers and MS Office software, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint, with special emphasis on database management (using MS Access and Excel).
  • Programming experience (preferably Visual Basic).
  • Practical experience using ESRI products (ArcMap, Publisher, ArcReader, Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst).
  • Familiarity with municipal, regional, provincial, and federal datasets.
  • Proven organization, communication, and administrative skills.
  • Ability to problem-solve, be creative, and balance and prioritize competing needs.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team player.
  • Attention to detail. 

 

Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements 

  • Enter data into a computer terminal, PC, or other keyboard device requiring continuous or repetitive arm-hand-eye movement.
  •  Remain in a sitting position for extended periods.
  •  Perform fine hand movements in the accurate use of drafting instruments.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered
