**SUMMARY**

The Fisheries Technician assists the department in organizing, administering and coordinating the day-to-day activities of the Fisheries programs. The Technician is also responsible for supporting activities to protect, develop and maintain fish species for environmental and recreational purposes.

**GENERAL TASKS**
- Support the Program Manager in organizing, administering and coordinating the day-to-day activities of the Fisheries programs.
- Work with the team to undertake a number of fishery enhancement activities, including Clam Harvesting, Crab Surveys and Salmon Monitoring.
- Monitor and enforce the terms and conditions of Communal Licenses within and on behalf of the First Nation.
- Interview fishermen to ensure compliance with First Nation Communal License and/or general Provincial regulations.
- Compile interview and fieldwork data into Microsoft Access and update the fisherperson information in Microsoft Excel.
- Perform basic chemical and biological analysis of water samples.
- Update and maintain the catch calendar.
- Draft monthly Fisheries Newsletter;
- Assist in the operation and maintenance of fisheries’ vessels and vehicles.
- Register the Fisheries team for various courses.
- Ensure MFN makes effective use of all resources including financial and human resources.
- Prepare monthly status reports for the Program Manager, either in written or oral form.
- Participate in relevant administrative meetings for the Nation and contribute to the overall management of MFN.
- Provide support and encouragement for the ongoing efforts of the MFN and for the betterment of the Nation.

**REQUIRED ABILITIES, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS**
- Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel and word processing.
- Must demonstrate a good working knowledge of community resources, particularly Aboriginal-specific resources.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to compile accurate records and prepare accurate reports.
- Good interpersonal skills and proven ability to establish rapport and build relationships with fisherperson of all educational and occupational backgrounds.
- Experience in a First Nations environment.
- Knowledge of the Tsimshian language and culture is an asset.
- Flexible, committed and enthusiastic.

**QUALIFICATIONS**
- One (1) year of work experience in a related role.
- Grade 12 graduation and/or equivalent.
- Valid CPR Certificate
- Level One.
- Valid First Aid Certificate - Level One.
- Small Vessel Operator Proficiency Training.
- Swift Water Rescue.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Experience working with First Nations communities.
