Role OverviewThe TBM Control Room Engineer is responsible for monitoring and managing Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) operations from the control room. This critical role ensures the smooth operation of the TBM by analyzing data, coordinating with on-site teams, and addressing real-time challenges. The position requires technical expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to respond swiftly to dynamic situations.
Key Responsibilities
Real-Time Monitoring
  • Continuously monitor TBM operations through control systems to ensure alignment with project specifications and performance targets.
  • Analyze data from sensors, including pressure, torque, and soil parameters, to maintain optimal TBM performance.
  • Identify anomalies in TBM operations and take immediate corrective actions in coordination with the shift team.

Coordination and Communication
  • Serve as the central point of communication between the control room, TBM operators, and the shift manager.
  • Relay critical operational information to on-site engineers and provide guidance for resolving issues.
  • Participate in daily briefings to review progress and plan for upcoming activities.

Equipment and System Management
  • Monitor the performance of TBM systems, including hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical components.
  • Ensure that all control room equipment is functioning correctly and report any malfunctions promptly.

Data Documentation and Reporting
  • Maintain accurate logs of operational data, incidents, and resolutions for each shift.
  • Prepare detailed shift reports and share them with project management teams to ensure transparency.
  • Contribute to the preparation of performance reviews and system optimization plans.

Emergency Response and Safety
  • Act as a first responder to system alarms and coordinate emergency actions with the shift team.
  • Ensure all operations comply with health, safety, and environmental (HSE) regulations.
  • Monitor the safety systems of the TBM and initiate shutdowns if necessary to prevent hazards.

Qualifications and Requirements
Experience:
  • Proven experience in TBM operations or underground construction, with a strong focus on control room activities.

Technical Expertise:
  • In-depth knowledge of TBM systems, including hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical components.
  • Proficiency in using control systems, monitoring software, and data analysis tools.

Problem-Solving Skills:
  • Strong analytical skills to diagnose issues and implement timely solutions.
  • Ability to manage high-pressure situations and make quick, informed decisions.

Soft Skills:
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills to collaborate effectively with on-site and remote teams.
  • High attention to detail to ensure accuracy in monitoring and reporting.

Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, or Civil) or a related field is preferred.
  • Certifications in tunneling or TBM operations are an asset.
