Through a holistic and integrated approach, the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), Women's and Infants’ Health: Labour and Delivery uses advanced clinical competencies to provide consultation and care plans for complex obstetrical patients, and guidance and leadership to nursing staff managing complex obstetrical patients. The CNS uses knowledge-mobilization techniques and the application of improvement science to promote and implement research-informed practice and quality improvement initiatives. The CNS champions, participates in, and leads research. 

Women’s and Infants’ Health is supported by Advanced Practice Nurses and Nurse Clinicians. The emphasis for this CNS position, while not restricted to, is high risk obstetrical patients planning to birth at SHS, our high risk Labour and Delivery unit, and our Labour and Delivery staff. The individual reports directly to the Senior Clinical Program Director, Women’s and Infants’ Health and works very closely with the Labour and Delivery Leadership team. The role is supported by a Nurse Clinician designated to the Labour and Delivery team.

Responsibilities

Direct Care and Consultation

Through a holistic and integrated approach, the CNS will provide comprehensive client and family directed care in collaboration with other members of the health care team. The CNS will integrate extensive clinical experience with theory, research and in-depth nursing and related knowledge to: 

• Initiate timely and appropriate nursing consultation and collaboration with other care providers
• Develop complex nursing care plans
• Guide decision making in complex clinical situations
• Disseminate knowledge using appropriate delivery methods
• Recognize the need for an plan outcome measurements, including the Labour and Delivery balanced score card (eg: client feedback, conducting surveys, intervention rates, staff adherence to best practice etc)
• Minimize variances in care, and prevent adverse outcomes

System Improvement

The CNS will contribute to the effective functioning of Labour and Delivery by:

• Generating and incorporating new nursing knowledge to develop standards of care, practice guidelines, care pathways/protocols, programs and policies
• Participating in strategic planning
• Identifying and leading quality and risk reviews and initiatives
• Understanding and integrating the principles of resource allocation and cost effectiveness in decision making
• Participating in recruitment and retention activities
• Implementing improvements in structures and processes
• Identifying, advocating, leading and managing change

Education

The CNS is committed to professional growth and learning for all health-care providers, students and patients and achieves this by:

• Planning, coordinating and conducting patient and health care team educational programs based on needs, priorities and organizational resources including Fetal Health Surveillance, NRP, MoreOB and PROMPT
• Disseminating new knowledge through formal and informal channels, including internal and external presentations and publications 
• Identifying the learning needs of nurses and other members of the health care team and finds or develops programs and resources to meet those needs
• Being a mentor, preceptor, coach or role model
• Supporting a culture of professional growth, continuous learning and collaborative practice
• Building capacity and contributing to succession planning by mentoring nurses to pursue graduate studies
• Participating in collaborative projects with academic institutions

Research

Job Requirements

• Current certificate of registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
• Master’s degree in Nursing
• Recent experience as a Labour and Delivery nurse in a tertiary center (required) 
• Recent experience as an advanced practice nurse in Labour and Delivery (preferred)
• Certification in Fetal Health Surveillance and NRP, instructor status preferred, or willingness to complete within 6 months of hire
• Certification in Perinatal Nursing preferred
• Demonstrated ability to lead and sustain change
• Demonstrated experience with knowledge transfer
• Utilizes and demonstrates a comprehensive theoretical knowledge base and advanced level of clinical competence in the care of obstetrical and laboring patients and families
• Effective verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal and customer service skills
• Excellent organization and time management skills
• Excellent decision making, problem recognition, problem solving skills, negotiation and conflict resolution skills
• Program planning and evaluation methodology skills
• Commitment to collaborative practice
• Ability to work effectively and independently under stressful/challenging conditions
• Ability to utilize information technology and support staff in its application, especially Cerner and Fetal Link Systems
• Expertise in Power Point, Visio our other equivalent platforms
• Eligible for cross-appointment to an academic institution (preferred)
• Member of CAPWHN, RNAO and other professional associations/organizations relevant to the role an asset
• Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance history
