Salary Scale: $67,568 to $84,460 annually


PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:

A. Digital Archival Support 50%

B. Archival Research 40%

C. Other Duties 10%

Reporting to the Director, Makwa Waakaa’igan, the Digital Archives Specialist is focused on sharing the SRSC’s archival and outreach online resources in a range of mediums. The work of the Digital Archives Specialist supports the SRSC’s mandate of sharing, healing, and learning, as well as Algoma University’s Special Mission.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

Digital Archival Support (50%)

  • Coordinate the development and implementation of a digital preservation workflow for all previously digitized archival content.
  • Coordinate with Library staff and the Department of Innovation & Technology for archives website maintenance, accessibility compliance, and migration.
  • Support relationships with other archival institutions for shared access and maintenance of digital records related to Residential Schools.
  • Create digital/online resources to facilitate archival use and sharing of Residential School history.
  • Assist the SRSC Researcher/Curator with the digitization of archival materials through online platforms.
  • Support the SRSC Researcher/Curator in the digitization of the existing archival collection.
  • Assist staff in the oversight of student research and digitization.
  • Consult with community on access to archival resources in digital formats.

Archival Research (40%)

  • Support the Survivor and Intergenerational Survivor community with genealogy and Residential School research pertaining to family/community histories.
  • Support the larger Algoma University community on genealogical and family history research.
  • Navigate genealogical research databases outside of the SRSC collection to facilitate research.
  • Support community outreach in relation to genealogy research.
  • Support community partners and external agencies in accessing digital records in alignment with the University and SRSC policies.

Other Duties (10%)

  • Assist the SRSC and the Director with digital outreach through virtual tours, Truth Walks, and education programming.
  • Facilitate communications, digital outreach, and virtual tours/education programming with public school boards in alignment with Ontario curriculum.
  • Work in collaboration with the Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association (CSAA) on oversight and support of the maintenance of the virtual component of Reclaiming Shingwauk Hall.
  • Support and maintain the upkeep of the Shingwauk Hall exhibits.
  • Other duties, as assigned by the Director.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Master of Library & Information Science (MLIS), Master of Archival Studies (MAS), or Master of Arts (MA) degree in Public History, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, is required.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of work experience in a related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of digital preservation, digitization standards, and metadata standards is required.
  • Knowledge of the legacy of Residential Schools is required.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and Residential School Survivors is required.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture lifeways is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of the Ojibwe language is considered an asset.
  • Experience coordinating a digital archive, digitization, or digital history project.
  • Experience using photo editing software, such as Adobe Suite.
  • Experience using Optical Character Recognition software.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to prioritize work in order to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds, styles, and abilities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
